Synopsis

Castles Razed examines the deliberate destruction of castles in Western Europe from the late medieval period through the early modern era, revealing how razing these structures served as a vital tool for political control and state formation. The book argues that castle ruins are not simply remnants of time, but active symbols of shifting power dynamics and challenges the romanticized view of castles by demonstrating how their destruction was a calculated effort to consolidate power and suppress dissent. One intriguing fact explored is how the rise of gunpowder warfare rendered these once-impregnable fortresses strategically obsolete, leading to their intentional dismantling. The book also investigates how these deliberate acts of castle destruction reshaped the physical landscape and historical memory, influencing architectural trends and national identity.

Focusing on the motives and methods behind the razing, the book explores key examples of castle demolitions, analyzing the political motivations, military tactics, and social consequences. The study progresses by first establishing the significance of castles, then diving into specific case studies of deliberate destruction, and finally examining the aftermath of this destruction on national identity and architectural trends.

The more you understand someone's history, the better you can see their humanity. This is true for individuals as well as for society at large. Race relations have suffered because of the erasure of important Black history and cultural context. As we fill in the gaps of our collective knowledge, communities can grow in understanding, empathy, and solidarity.

Terence Lester shares the buried history of the struggles Black people have faced against unjust systems. He tells powerful stories of courage, injustice, pain, and triumph, including ones from his own history. He also unpacks the sociological and cultural dynamics of unconscious bias and inattentional ignorance that keep us apart, and how they can be overcome. This honest account of what it's like to be Black in America paves the way for the church to move beyond showing support from a distance toward loving one another in long-term solidarity, advocacy, and friendship.

Nearly 500 years after the Spanish conquered their mighty empire, the Aztecs are often remembered today for their major capital, Tenochtitlan, as well as being fierce conquerors of the Valley of Mexico who often engaged in human sacrifice rituals. Unlike the Maya, the Aztecs are not widely viewed or remembered with nuance, in part because their own leader burned extant Aztec writings and rewrote a mythologized history explaining his empire’s dominance less than a century before the Spanish arrived. Naturally, Cortes and other Spaniards depicted the Aztecs as savages greatly in need of conversion to Catholicism. While the Maya are remembered for their astronomy, numeral system, and calendar, the Aztecs have primarily been remembered in a far narrower way, despite continuing to be a source of pride to Mexicans through the centuries.
For the Aztec, astronomy was not a purely scientific pursuit but intimately linked to religious, mythological, and ideological elements that were of the highest importance. The celestial realm held a sacred nature, as did the many gods and goddesses that dwelt there, so for all Mesoamerican cultures, astronomy was a fundamental part of their daily lives. Thus, astronomy was present in their calendars, religion, and even agriculture, and in close relation to astronomy, the concept of time was also an essential part of their worldview. The Aztec recorded many of the astronomical events they observed in codices and hieroglyphic inscriptions, but the main evidence of their deep astronomical knowledge comes from their calendar system. This information was then used to plan the orientation of buildings and ceremonial centers, which were aligned to sunrises or sunsets corresponding to special dates, such as solstices or equinoxes. Observational calendars were also used to schedule agricultural activities, as well as rituals, festivals, and celebrations, on an annual cycle.
