  The Tenmei era, spanning from 1781 to 1789, marked one of the most tumultuous periods in early modern Japanese history. Under the rule of the Tokugawa shogunate, Japan faced a complex web of challenges that created the perfect storm for one of the country’s most devastating famines. The political leadership at the time struggled to manage internal pressures, while nature unleashed a series of disasters that exposed deep structural weaknesses in Japanese society and governance. 
  Politically, the Tokugawa regime was already under strain. After more than 150 years of relative stability, cracks had begun to appear in the shogunate’s centralized control. Corruption was increasingly evident among regional officials, and the rigid class system left little room for social mobility or adaptive governance. Daimyōs, or feudal lords, often prioritized local interests over national concerns, making unified responses to crises difficult. These issues weakened the ability of the central government to respond decisively to the hardships that were beginning to unfold. 
  Economically, Japan in the late 18th century was a fragile system, heavily reliant on rice production. Despite modest attempts at economic reform, the country remained vulnerable to crop failure, inflation, and regional imbalances. Merchant classes were rising in wealth and influence, while peasants bore the brunt of heavy taxation and poor harvests. The disconnect between economic policy and rural reality would prove fatal when disaster struck.

Where possible he relates the historical happenings and maritime moments to the present day, be it when tracing the history of the screw, misinformation (fake news) during the Second World War, plague ships in the fourteenth century, or Russia's ill-fated war with Japan in 1904. The events covered range from Henry V's invasion of France in 1415, consisting mainly of chartered French ships and paid for partially by Dick Whittington, to episodes in the Second World War, like the Somali Camel Corps capturing a German U-boat. Other historic figures involved include Horatio Nelson, Napoleon, Rudolf Diesel and Lawrence of Arabia. The 25 stories and over 100 cartoons are a treasure-trove of compelling, salt-infused, tales told with imagination and humour, with an eye on the present day, which will be enjoyed by anyone with an interest in maritime history (or even just history).

  Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of ancient Egyptian civilization was its inception from the ground up, as the Egyptians themselves had no prior civilization which they could use as a template. In fact, Egypt itself became a template for the civilizations that followed. The Greeks and the Romans were so impressed with Egyptian culture that they often attributed many aspects of their own culture to the Egyptians. With that said, some minor elements of ancient Egyptian culture were, indeed, passed on to later civilizations. Egyptian statuary appears to have had an initial influence on the Greek version, and the ancient Egyptian language continued long after the pharaonic period in the form of the Coptic language.  
  	Despite the strides made in understanding Egyptian history, there are obvious difficulties in assessing what ancient societies ate and drank, even as advances in technology continue to open up new methods of analysis for food deposits in human remains and archaeological sites. In general, the majority of what ancient individuals ate did not last long, and in the case of ancient Egypt, there is an even greater additional time factor. Ancient Egyptian civilization lasted over 3,000 years, a time period that if applied to Europe encompasses the time before Rome was even founded right up to the present day. Within such a lengthy period a great deal happens in any society, and in Egypt, numerous dynasties came and went, with constant invasions both by Egyptians into nearby regions and back into Egypt by neighboring civilizations. All of these different groups presumably had their own preferences for food and drink. Population migrations, especially the ones led by the Sea Peoples into the region around 1250 BCE, combined with other factors such as climate to impact the food and drink consumed by Egyptians.
