An impassioned case for argument's central role in human life, by one of America's most distinguished cultural critics

From Eve's crafty exchange with the serpent, to Martin Luther King's soaring, subtle ultimatums, to the throes of Twitter—argument's drainpipe—the human desire to prevail with words has been not just a moral but an existential compulsion. In this dazzling reformulation of argument, renowned critic Lee Siegel portrays the true art of argument as much deeper and far more embracing than mere quarrel, dispute, or debate. It is the supreme expression of humanity's longing for a better life, born of empathy and of care for the world and those who inhabit it. With wit, passion, and striking insights, Siegel plumbs the emotional and psychological sources of clashing words, weaving through his exploration the untold story of the role argument has played in societies throughout history. Each life, he maintains, is an argument for that particular way of living; every individual style of argument is also a case that is being made for that person's right to argue. Argument is at the heart of the human experience, and language, at its most liberated and expressive, inexorably bends toward argument.

We broke our new series on learning Dutch down into different learning stages. Start with the "Lower Beginner" books followed by the "Beginner" and "Upper Beginner" books. Next, progress to the "Intermediate" series, then test and reinforce your knowledge with the "Conversations" series.
This audiobook is divided into units. While it provides different learning patterns and accommodates various needs, this audiobook focuses on helping you improve your ability to understand, speak, and memorise Dutch.
In Unit 1 you will hear Dutch decoded with each syllable spoken very slowly and clearly with repetition. Immediately before each sentence is spoken, you will hear the translation, so you will always understand what is being said.
Unit 2 focuses solely on increasing your listening ability, which will improve your abilities to engage in dialogue with a native Dutch speaker. This chapter requires you to listen very carefully to nuances in the language.
By Unit 3 you will already notice progress in your abilities to speak and understand Dutch. The spoken translation is followed by two repetitions in Dutch at a completely natural speed. While you are learning to process naturally spoken Dutch, Units 3 and 4 will help you memorise new vocabulary and full sentences.
In Unit 5 you can test yourself on how much you have learned. If you are having difficulties, we suggest you revisit the listening, speaking, or memorisation section of Units 1, 2 3 or 4, according to what you need more help with.

  • The Hindsight Bias - The Illusion of Foreseeing Outcomes After They Occur - cover

    The Hindsight Bias - The...

Hindsight bias, often referred to as the "knew-it-all-along" effect, is the cognitive phenomenon in which people perceive past events as having been more predictable than they actually were. After an event has occurred, individuals tend to believe they foresaw the outcome, even though there was no reasonable way to predict it at the time. This bias can distort our memories, judgments, and perceptions, leading us to think that we knew the outcome of a situation from the very beginning, even though the reality is quite different.
At its core, hindsight bias is rooted in how our brains process information. Once an event unfolds and its outcome is known, our minds tend to reconstruct our memories of the past to fit that outcome, making it appear as though we were more certain of the result all along. This creates a false sense of understanding and control, making it easier for us to believe that we could have anticipated the event, despite evidence to the contrary. It is a natural byproduct of how we seek coherence and meaning in our experiences, often bending the facts to align with our current understanding.
The implications of hindsight bias are vast and far-reaching, impacting a wide range of areas, including decision-making, learning, and judgment. In personal and professional contexts, it can lead to overconfidence, as individuals feel that they are more skilled at predicting outcomes than they truly are. This overconfidence can cloud judgment and hinder growth, as it prevents people from acknowledging mistakes or learning from their missteps. In legal contexts, it can distort the perception of whether certain decisions or actions were reasonable at the time they were made, often leading to unjust conclusions and unfair blame.
