Synopsis

"Facebook What" delivers a comprehensive analysis of how a simple college networking site evolved into a global digital powerhouse that has fundamentally altered human connection and economic systems. The book skillfully weaves together three crucial narratives: Facebook's technical development, its transformation of the digital economy, and its profound impact on social interaction patterns worldwide.Through a systematic approach combining technical documentation, financial data, and academic research, the text illuminates the platform's unprecedented influence on modern society. At the heart of the analysis is Facebook's ingenious creation of a self-reinforcing ecosystem where user engagement, advertising revenue, and data collection work in perfect synergy. The book progresses logically from Facebook's 2004 origins through its technical architecture, examining how the platform scales to serve billions while revolutionizing digital advertising and reshaping privacy concepts. What sets this work apart is its multidisciplinary perspective, bridging computer science with behavioral economics and social psychology to provide a complete picture of Facebook's impact. The book maintains accessibility while tackling complex concepts, making it valuable for both technology professionals and general readers interested in understanding social media's broader implications. Through clear technical explanations and real-world examples, it addresses crucial contemporary issues including data privacy, content moderation, and the platform's role in information dissemination. This balanced analysis helps readers comprehend the full scope of Facebook's influence while making informed decisions about platform usage in our increasingly digital world.

Do you love wandering around you garden looking at your trees, bushes, plants and wonder what use they might have? Of course, the turnips, runner beans et cetera on your vegetable patch you know that they are good for you. But what about marigolds, dandelions, marsh mallow, acorns, pine needles? Yes, they are all edible one way or another. And going for a ramble in the Countryside? There are many wild plants, shrubs and trees that have some part that is edible. But be careful and know exactly what it is you are picking. There are two umbiliferae that you need to be aware of. Cow parsley is edible but the plant is very similar in appearance to Hemlock, which if ingested can kill you. Also, do you know which plants contain ingredients that can be made into health boosters or medicine? A surprising number, but not all of these are edible. Many plants are toxic to humans, although some contain ingredients which can be made into medicines. This book surveys over 600 plant species which were compiled into a comprehensive data-base, from which tables were constructed in the book for easy reference. Common names are given against their Botanical names. Flowers were grouped by their petal numbers. The use of each plant was recorded: is it edible, does it have health benefits, is it toxic? A very useful compendium of plant species for all plant lovers. The book is illustrated with numerous colour images of various flowers and plants.

Bond—James Bond. In the 80s and 90s, the debonair superspy's games failed to live up to the giddy thrills of his films. That all changed when British studio Rare unleashed GoldenEye 007 in 1997. In basements and college dorms across the world, friends bumped shoulders while shooting, knifing, exploding, and slapping each other's digital faces in the Nintendo 64 game that would redefine the modern first-person shooter genre and become the most badass party game of its generation.

But GoldenEye's success was far from a sure thing. For years of development, GoldenEye's team of rookie developers were shooting in the dark with no sense of what the N64 or its controller would be like, and the game's relentless violence horrified higher-ups at squeaky clean Nintendo. As development lagged far behind the debut of the tie-in film GoldenEye, the game nearly came out an entire Bond movie too late.

Through extensive interviews with GoldenEye's creators, writer and scholar Alyse Knorr traces the story of how this unlikely licensed game reinvigorated a franchise and a genre. Learn all the stories behind how this iconic title was developed, and why GoldenEye 007 has continued to kick the living daylights out of every other Bond game since.
