Synopsis

"Digital Privacy Rights" offers a comprehensive exploration of one of today's most pressing challenges: protecting personal data in a world where individuals generate vast amounts of digital information. The book expertly weaves together the historical evolution of privacy rights, current legislative frameworks, and practical protection strategies, making complex concepts accessible to both professionals and general readers interested in understanding their digital rights.

The book uniquely approaches privacy protection through a three-pronged framework: legislation, organizational compliance, and individual awareness. It traces the development of privacy laws from the 1970 Fair Credit Reporting Act through to modern regulations like GDPR and CCPA, demonstrating how privacy protections have evolved alongside technological advancement. Through real-world case studies and evidence-based insights drawn from regulatory bodies and cybersecurity firms, readers gain practical understanding of how privacy breaches occur and how to prevent them.

Structured in three main sections, the book progresses logically from theoretical foundations to practical applications, making it particularly valuable for legal professionals, IT managers, and business leaders implementing privacy programs. The content balances technical accuracy with accessibility, offering actionable strategies for protecting sensitive information while examining current debates surrounding privacy rights, including the delicate balance between security and privacy in our increasingly connected world.

Covid alerted the nation to the reality that K-12 schools were infested with ideologues bent on indoctrinating children. Then, three years after the beginning of the pandemic, the response to Hamas's genocidal assault on Israel made Americans aware that the same tumor had wholly sickened our country's colleges and universities. Now, conservatives—and increasingly, moderates and old-school liberals—want to know exactly how the radical left captured higher education.

Florida has been the vanguard in the war to restore sanity to higher education. And Richard Corcoran has been one of its commanding generals. When Corcoran was Florida's education commissioner, he was the point person for reopening schools and banning mask mandates. He triumphed. Then, he was given a herculean task: remaking a college overrun by radicalism and cancel culture. In 2023, he moved into the president's office in Sarasota, took on a campus mob, and challenged a media firestorm.

Just a year later, Corcoran achieved the seemingly impossible. He turned around New College of Florida. Now, free speech is protected. Violence and anti-Semitism are abolished. DEI bureaucracy is eliminated. And enrollment records are being broken. Storming the Ivory Tower is the story of how Corcoran is winning the fight for freedom in hostile territory and how others can join.

    Plowshares into Swords -...

An in-depth look at how the ideas formulated by the interwar League of Nations shaped American thinking on the modern global order.
Plowshares into Swords recaptures the power of knowledge and information developed between World War I and World War II by an international society of institutions and individuals committed to liberal international order and given focus by the League of Nations in Geneva. That information and analysis revolutionized critical debates in a world in crisis. In doing so, David Ekbladh transforms conventional understandings of the United States’ postwar hegemony, showing that important elements of it were profoundly influenced by ideas that emerged from international exchanges. The League’s work was one part of a larger transnational movement that included the United States and which saw the emergence of concepts like national income, gross domestic product, and other attempts to define and improve the standards of living, as well as new approaches to old questions about the role of government. Forged as tools for peace these ideas were beaten into weapons as World War II threatened. Ekbladh recounts how, though the US had never been a member of the organization, vital parts of the League were rescued after the fall of France in 1940 and given asylum at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. However, this presence in the US is just one reason its already well-regarded economic analyses and example were readily mobilized by influential American and international figures for an Allied “war of ideas,” plans for a postwar world, and even blueprints for the new United Nations. How did this body of information become so valuable? As Ekbladh makes clear, the answer is that information and analysis themselves became crucial currencies in global affairs: to sustain a modern, liberal global order, a steady stream of information about economics, politics, and society was, and remains, indispensable.

    Plagues and Their Aftermath -...

From a plague in Athens during the Peloponnesian War in 430 BCE, to another in 540 that wiped out half the population of the Roman empire, down through the Black Death in the Middle Ages and on through the 1918 flu epidemic (which killed between 50 and 100 million people) and this century's deadly SARS outbreak, plagues have been a much more relentless fact of life than many realize.

The legacy of epidemics, Brian Michael Jenkins observes, is not only one of lives lost but of devastated economies and social disorder, all of which have severe political repercussions.

Thus, each chapter of Plagues and Their Aftermath draws on those historical precursors to focus on one particular aspect of their aftermath: What happens to political systems? What happens in the area of crime and terrorism? Do wars happen? What are the effects on cultures? What was the impact of widespread fear and public hysteria, of increased suspicion and scapegoating, of the spread of rumors and conspiracy theories?

Jenkins's sobering analysis is riveting and thought-provoking listening for general listeners and specialists alike, and throws welcome light into what many fear is a dark future.

Written with equal parts candor and lyricism, Pam Houston illuminates the interconnected histories of abortion in the United States and in her own life during the decades when Roe v. Wade was the law of the land. Houston guides us through the shifting landscapes of politics, the law, and self-determination in a country where access to medical care and the power to determine your own destiny are increasingly—and once again—dependent on geography and circumstance.

Eleven Lives in September: The Munich Massacre and the Olympics That Changed Forever
When terror struck the heart of Olympic idealism, the world changed forever.
On September the fifth, nineteen seventy-two, eight Palestinian terrorists climbed a fence into Munich’s Olympic Village. What should have been a celebration of peace became a twenty-two-hour crisis that ended with the murder of eleven Israeli athletes and coaches — and the end of Olympic innocence.
In this meticulously researched account, historian Quentin Drummond Anderson reconstructs every moment of the Munich massacre. Drawing on declassified government archives, police records, intelligence files, and survivor testimony, he shows how security failures and fatal miscommunication turned a hostage crisis into a global tragedy, broadcast live to the world.
Viewers were told the hostages had been rescued — only to learn hours later that all were dead. Germany’s rescue attempt at Fürstenfeldbruck airbase collapsed into chaos. Inexperience, hesitation, and political pressure proved lethal.
But this is not just a story of failure. It is a story of people.
David Berger, an American weightlifter who had made Israel his home. Mark Slavin, just eighteen years old, killed before he could compete. Moshe Weinberg, the coach who fought to protect his athletes and paid with his life.
The consequences still shape our world. Airport security, armed guards at public events, and modern counterterrorism all trace their origins to Munich.
The parallels to today are unmistakable. Terrorism targets joy, exploits media attention, and fuels cycles of retaliation. Munich was not an anomaly. It was a blueprint.
    This is not just history.
    It is a warning.

An active participant in the debates over same-sex marriage for three decades, philosopher John Corvino built strong relationships, and even friendships, with many on the other side. In this urgent and thought-provoking book, Corvino draws lessons from that experience to make the case for how to better engage with those with whom we disagree. Corvino knows from his own lived experience that it is possible to move beyond the polarization and toxicity of the current moment, and The Other Side provides a roadmap of how we might do so.Covering a range of hotly contested topics such as cancel culture, free speech, and civility, The Other Side is an essential guide for how to argue productively with others in the culture wars. Corvino argues that if we want to communicate effectively, we need to pay attention to what people are hearing as much as what you are saying—although he acknowledges that it us much harder to "read the room" in the age of social media, where remarks can go viral and be ripped from context. He also identifies various conversation stoppers that can frustrate productive dialogue. What are the costs of political polarization? When and why should you engage with views you strongly believe to be false? What is the point of civility—and what are its limits? When, if ever, should persons be cancelled? What are the benefits-and dangers-of giving people the benefit of the doubt? With his characteristic combination of common sense, generosity, humor, and wit, Corvino not only brings nuance and insight to these vital questions but provides compelling and constructive answers.
