Sinopsis

Correspondences and Parallels in European Literature, by Italian journalist and writer Alina J. Di Mattia, an expert in seventeenth-century history and culture, offers a compelling comparative study of ten emblematic author pairs from the European literary tradition. Moving in reverse chronological order—from the twentieth century back to the origins of literature—the volume explores enduring themes that have shaped European thought: inner journeys and transformation, justice and oppression, beauty and transience, solitude and hope. Though rooted in their respective historical contexts, the works analyzed reveal a striking sense of contemporaneity and a shared engagement with the complexities of human experience. Each chapter stages a dialogue between two writers—separated by time and geography, yet united by profound thematic affinities.By examining differences in style, poetics, and worldview, the book demonstrates that European literature is not a mosaic of isolated traditions, but a living system forged through intersections, reinterpretations, and continuous exchange. The aim is to offer readers a symbolic map of European literary thought—one that both interrogates the present and renews a vital connection with the past.

Socrates stands as one of the most influential figures in the history of philosophy, a thinker whose ideas and methods continue to shape intellectual inquiry. Born in Athens around 469 BCE, he never wrote a single philosophical text, yet his impact endures through the works of his students, particularly Plato. His approach to philosophy was rooted in dialogue, questioning, and an unwavering commitment to seeking truth. Unlike the Sophists of his time, who often prioritized rhetorical skill and persuasion, Socrates believed that wisdom was not about appearing knowledgeable but about recognizing one’s own ignorance. His method of relentless questioning, now known as the Socratic Method, remains a cornerstone of critical thinking and philosophical discourse.
Socrates lived during a period of great political and social upheaval in Athens. The city had emerged from the Peloponnesian War weakened and uncertain about its future. In this context, Socrates became both an admired and controversial figure. His insistence on questioning authority and challenging conventional beliefs made him a target for those who saw his influence as destabilizing. He did not align himself with any particular political faction but instead sought to examine the moral and ethical foundations of society. His discussions often exposed the contradictions in the reasoning of politicians, poets, and fellow citizens, leading many to view him as a disruptive force.
His trial in 399 BCE remains one of the most significant moments in philosophical history. Accused of corrupting the youth and impiety, Socrates defended himself in a manner that was both defiant and deeply philosophical. In The Apology, Plato’s account of the trial, Socrates argues that he was fulfilling a divine mission by encouraging people to think critically and examine their lives.

Known as the godfather of the civil rights movement, Howard Thurman served as a spiritual adviser to Martin Luther King Jr. and other leaders and activists in the 1960s. Thurman championed silence, contemplation, common unity, and nonviolence as powerful dimensions of social change. But Dr. Lerita Coleman Brown didn't learn about him during her years of spiritual-direction training. Only when a friend heard of her longing to encounter the work of Black contemplatives did she finally learn about Thurman, his mystical spirituality, and his liberating ethic.

In What Makes You Come Alive, Brown beckons listeners into their own apprenticeship with Thurman. Brown walks with us through Thurman's inimitable life and commitments as he summons us into centering down, encountering the natural world, paying attention to sacred synchronicity, unleashing inner authority, and recognizing the genius of the religion of Jesus. We learn from Thurman's resilience in the psychologically terrorizing climate of the Jim Crow South, his encounters with Quakers and with Mahatma Gandhi, and his sense of being guided by the Spirit. Each chapter illuminates an aspect of Thurman's work and includes reflection questions and spiritual practices.

As Springfield residents decorated for Halloween in September 1972, the crime rate in the quiet, affluent township was at its lowest in years. That mood was shattered when the body of sixteen-year-old Jeannette DePalma was discovered in the local woods, allegedly surrounded by strange objects. Some feared witchcraft was to blame, while others believed a serial killer was on the loose. Rumors of a police coverup ran rampant, and the case went unsolved along with the murders of several other young women. Now, four decades after Jeannette DePalma's tragic death, authors Jesse P. Pollack and Mark Moran present the definitive account of this shocking cold case.

The book of Genesis, written at the beginning of recorded history, remains a thoroughly unique document. This ancient work transcends the primitive mythologies of the ancient Near East as a divine account of Earth's earliest ages. It is informative in its content, beautiful in its arrangement, and inspiring in its appeal. There is something of value for everyone— the scientist, the historian, the theologian, the housewife, the farmer, the traveler, and the man or woman of God.
As a revelation of the mind of God to the minds of men and women, Genesis makes a fitting beginning for the story of God's love for his creation, and this, the King James Version of the Old Testament, remains the favorite of millions for both its inspirational and poetic qualities.
