Beschreibung

In "Curious Punishments of Bygone Days," Alice Morse Earle masterfully navigates the intricate tapestry of historical penal practices, illuminating the bizarre and often harsh methods employed in various cultures. Earle's literary style is characterized by careful research intertwined with a vivid narrative that brings the past to life, making her work both engaging and educational. Rooted in the early 20th-century fascination with social history, this book explores the moral dimensions of punishment, revealing societal attitudes towards crime and justice in bygone eras and underscoring the transformation of legal systems over time. Earle, an esteemed American historian and author, was deeply influenced by her extensive knowledge of colonial history and social customs. Her passion for infusing historical accuracy with relatable anecdotes likely stems from her upbringing in a heritage-rich environment, along with her commitment to documenting the nuances of daily life. Two great streams of Northern immigration met on the shores of Britain during the ninth, tenth, and eleventh centuries. The Norsemen from the deep fiords of Western Norway, fishing and raiding along the coasts, pushed out their adventurous boats into the Atlantic, and in the dawn of Northern history we find them already settled in the Orkney and Shetland Isles, whence they raided and settled southward to Caithness, Fife, and Northumbria on the east, and to the Hebrides, Galloway, and Man on the western coast. Fresh impetus was given to this outward movement by the changes of policy introduced by Harald Fairhair, first king of Norway (872–933). Through him a nobler type of emigrant succeeded the casual wanderer, and great lords and kings’ sons came over to consolidate the settlements begun by humbler agencies. Iceland was at the same time peopled by a similar stock. The Dane, contemporaneously with the Norseman, came by a different route. Though he seems to have been the first to invade Northumbria (if Ragnar and his sons were really Danes), his movement was chiefly round the southern shores of England, passing over by way of the Danish and Netherland coast up the English Channel, and round to the west. Both streams met in Ireland, where a sharp and lengthened contest was fought out between the two nations, and where both took deep root, building cities and absorbing much of the commerce of the country. The Viking was at first simply a bold adventurer, but a mixture of trading and raiding became a settled practice with large numbers of Norsemen, who, when work at home was slack and the harvest was sown or reaped, filled up the time by pirate inroads on their own or neighboring lands. Hardy sailors and fearless fighters they were; and life would have seemed too tame had it meant a continuous course of peaceful farming or fishing. New possessions and new conquests were the salt of life.

Populism, as a political ideology and movement, is rooted in the idea of a fundamental divide between "the people" and "the elite." It asserts that the common people, often portrayed as hardworking and morally upright, are being oppressed or ignored by an elite class of politicians, businessmen, and intellectuals who are perceived as self-serving and out of touch with the needs of the general public. The term "populism" has evolved over time and can be used to describe a range of political movements and leaders who claim to represent the interests of the ordinary person against established powers. However, despite its widespread usage, the definition of populism remains fluid, often shaped by the context in which it is used.
Historically, populism has roots in 19th-century agrarian movements in the United States and Europe. In the United States, for instance, the Populist Party emerged in the late 1800s as a response to the economic struggles of farmers, advocating for policies such as free silver and the direct election of senators. Similarly, in Europe, populist movements often arose in opposition to industrialization and the concentration of wealth and power in the hands of the elites. These early forms of populism focused on economic issues and the struggle of the working class and rural populations against the powerful urban elites and industrialists.
In modern times, populism has become more varied and globalized, often adapting to the specific cultural, economic, and political climates of different countries. Contemporary populist movements often capitalize on discontent with globalization, rising inequality, and the perceived failures of traditional political elites to address the concerns of ordinary citizens. The populist playbook has expanded to include a wide array of strategies, from fiery rhetoric and social media manipulation to direct attacks on democratic institutions and the media.

In America, either rights come from God—or they don't. This is the ultimate war, and God-Given or Bust tells how patriots can win.

American exceptionalism is rooted in the idea that individual rights come from God and government is only in place to preserve and protect those rights. But America's losing sight of that concept. America's turning into a country where the government grants rights and privileges to only those the government deems worthy—and takes them from those it deems unworthy. This is not how the Founding Fathers envisioned the nation; this is not how the concept of inalienable rights coming from a Creator works. Rather, this is how Marxism, communism, and collectivism spread.

If we want a nation that's free for generations to come, then we must reclaim the notion of God-given and ditch the idea of government-granted. The only way to do that is for Americans of faith to rise up and inject biblical values and godly principles into government, culture, and society, and put God once again at the center. It's time to demand the God-given—or the great American experiment will come to an end.
