Meet Ashraf and his 'Habibti' – his daughter Shazia. He's an Egyptian, Muslim taxi driver; she's half-Egyptian, half-Wiganese, and more interested in the last call at the bar than the call to prayer. Their relationship is put to the test when Ashraf introduces Shazia to his new Egyptian bride, whilst she is attempting to break the news of her own secret engagement. In Ashraf's taxi they must navigate driving lessons, sing karaoke and explore whether, despite their differences, family can win out regardless. Habibti Driver is a heartwarming and hilarious play, based on Shamia Chalabi's real-life experiences and co-written with Sarah Henley, exploring the clashes, compromises and comedy that come with living in a mixed-culture family in today's Britain. First performed in an earlier version – Burkas and Bacon Butties – at the VAULT Festival, London, this revised, full-length version premiered at the Octagon Theatre Bolton in April 2022, co-produced with Tara Finney Productions.Voir livre

'I can't face the big stuff so I comb the moors for a tiny yellow flower' – so begins Tormentil, the second poetry collection by Ian Humphreys. Set largely in the starkly beautiful West Yorkshire moorlands, these poems creep and bloom across geographies and time. Isolated by grief in the first months of the pandemic, Humphreys goes in search of hope and blessings among the burnt heather, tumbledown mills and canal locks near his home in the Calder Valley. This book was written over a period of ten years. These poems are inspirational, they leave the reader with points to ponder. The book is inspired by real life experiences and stories from those around me. The book covers a wide range of topics from family dynamics, love, oppression, xenophobia, discrimination. It touches on issues, that people are not comfortable sharing. The book cover was painted by a great friend, whom I consider a sister, a Kenyan painter and art entrepreneur Wanjiru Kibera. We met in France 10 years ago. So I hope this book will be a full artistic encounter, that will enrich and touch your soul. I hope it will cause reflective thinking. As, for me the author, I have a Bachelor's degree in French Theatre and Cinema, both practical and theoretical (Arts du Spectacle/Performing Arts) from the prestigious French University : Université de Grenoble Alpes.
