Beschreibung

Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837-1909) was a British poet, writer and playwright of the Victorian era. Active in the aesthetic circle, romantic and then decadent, he met Oscar Wilde and other famous intellectuals and artists of the same environment, attending the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and becoming a friend of the poet, artist and initiate Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Eccentric personality, with a strong taste for artistic provocation, inspired by writers such as the Marquis de Sade, Percy Bysshe Shelley and Charles Baudelaire, his poetry was very controversial, due to its themes (sadomasochism, suicide, lesbianism, irreligiosity); his lyrics are also characterized by original versification solutions, by the cult of paganism and the idealized Middle Ages, and of absolute freedom. From 1903 to 1909 he was nominated for the Nobel Prize for Literature. With Alfred Edward Housman, Robert Browning, Alfred Tennyson, Ernest Dowson and William Butler Yeats, he is considered one of the most representative lyric poets of Victorian literature. He died in Putney (London) on April 10, 1909.Swinburne’s literary output is vast and includes poems, plays, songs, novels, short stories and essays on literary criticism.Songs before Sunrise, first published in London in 1871 and dedicated to the Italian revolutionary and Freemason Giuseppe Mazzini, is one of Swinburne’s finest collections of poetry. Based on his pagan and pantheistic ideals and on the revolutionary spirit of that time, it is a devoted and warm homage to Italy and the Mediterranean, with references to ancient mythology and the national independence of peoples.

Lady, the first full collection of poems by Laurie Bolger, arrives 'all giddy with endorphins' and explores the many roles girls and women are asked to play and the dressing-up outfits they try on for size – whether housewife or hen, sister or mum, landlady, exercise instructor or best friend forever. Bolger's poems turn her bold, funny and wise words on boys, body image and the pressure to make yourself fit into a pigeon-hole, when all you really want to do is soar away on your own wings.
Here, these gritty and effervescent poems look to the things that sustain us when navigating an imperfect world obsessed with perfection. Whether dancing in the kitchen, crying in the bath or eating crisps, these poems are equal parts delicious, joyous, and bittersweet. A celebration of the resilience of working-class women and the solidarity and love found in friendship and family, Bolger's poems dare to dream and be wild – and invite us all to join her.

The Man Who Had All the Luck is a charming story of the fate of a young Midwestern man whose fortune shines on him while it passes over everyone else around him. The play wrestles with the unanswerable - the question of the justice of fate, and how it is that one man fails and another, no more or less capable, achieves some glory in life.

An L.A. Theatre Works full-cast performance featuring Emily Bergl, Kevin Chamberlin, Tim DeKay, James Gammon, Lee Garlington, Graham Hamilton, Tom McGowan, Kurtwood Smith, Russell Soder and Tegan West.

Produced in 458 BC, Aeschylus' Choephori is the second play in the Oresteian trilogy. The bloodshed begun in the first play with the murder of Agamemnon by his wife Clytemnestra is here continued when Agamemnon's son Orestes avenges his father's death by killing Clytemnestra. It is not until the third and final play, Eumenides, that peace is restored to the family of the Atreidae. The introduction discusses the pre-Aeschylean 'Orestes' tradition in literature and art, as well as the place of Choephori within the Oresteia, its imagery and dramatic structure, the questions of staging the play, and the manuscript tradition.

Inspired by The Wiz, this debut, full-length poetry collection celebrates South Side Chicago and a Black woman's quest for self-discovery—one that pulls her away from the safety of home and into her power

I Done Clicked My Heels Three Times takes its inspiration and concept from the cult classic film The Wiz to explore a Black woman's journey out of the South Side of Chicago and into adulthood. The narrative arc of The Wiz—a tumultuous departure from home, trials designed to reveal new things about the self, and the eventual return home—serves as a loose trajectory for this collection, pulling listeners through an abandoned barn, a Wendy's drive-thru, a Beyoncé video, Grandma's house, Sunday service, and the corner store. At every stop, the speaker is made to confront her womanhood, her sexuality, the visibility of her body, alcoholism in her family, and various ways in which narratives are imposed on her.

Subverting monolithic ideas about the South Side of Chicago, and re-casting the city as a living, breathing entity, I Done Clicked My Heels Three Times spans sestinas, sonnets, free-verse, and erasures, all to reimagine the concept of home. Chicago isn't just a city, but a teacher, a lingering shadow, a way of seeing the world.
