Beschreibung

In "The Wendigo and Other Tales," Algernon Blackwood masterfully weaves a tapestry of supernatural intrigue that explores the boundaries of reality and the unknown. Rich in atmospheric detail and psychological depth, these stories delve into the primal fears of humanity, invoking the wilderness and its eerie mysteries. Notably, the titular tale, "The Wendigo," draws upon the mythology of the Algonquin peoples, presenting a haunting narrative that reflects Blackwood's deep appreciation for nature and its enigmatic forces. His gothic prose style, marked by vivid imagery and a profound sense of place, enhances the suspense and emotional resonance of each tale, firmly rooting them within the early 20th-century tradition of weird fiction that sought to challenge the limits of human understanding. Algernon Blackwood, an influential figure in supernatural literature, was deeply inspired by his own experiences in the wilds of Canada and the American West. His early career as a journalist and his active participation in spiritualist circles informed his fascination with the ethereal and the incorporeal. This blend of personal exploration and imaginative prowess uniquely positions Blackwood's work within the literary context of his time, as he sought to elevate the realm of the supernatural beyond mere entertainment. For readers who seek a profound engagement with existential themes woven through chilling narratives, "The Wendigo and Other Tales" is a captivating selection. Blackwood's ability to evoke profound psychological and elemental fears resonates with those who appreciate literature that transcends the ordinary, inviting them into a world where nature itself can become both companion and adversary. A must-read for enthusiasts of classic horror and mysticism.

"The Shadow Out of Time" is a Cthulhu Mythos story by H. P. Lovecraft, first published in the June 1936 issue of Astounding Stories.
The story follows Professor Nathaniel Wingate Peaslee, who suffers a sudden mental collapse in 1908, losing his memory for five years. During this period, his body is controlled by an unknown intelligence while his own consciousness experiences life in a vast prehistoric era, housed within the body of a member of the Great Race of Yith—an ancient, time-traveling alien species that exchanges minds with beings across time to gather knowledge.
"The Shadow Out of Time" is one of Lovecraft’s most ambitious Cthulhu Mythos works, blending cosmic horror with science fiction, and exploring themes of non-linear time, forbidden knowledge, and mankind’s small place in an immense, alien universe.

Mary Amelia St. Clair was born on the 24th August 1863 in Rock Ferry, Cheshire.

Her father was a Liverpool shipowner who, after being made bankrupt, became an alcoholic and died whilst May was still a child. The family then moved to Ilford, just outside London and, after a solitary year of education, May was required to stay home and help look after her older brothers, four of whom were suffering from fatal congenital heart disease.

Despite this difficult start May was determined to pursue a literary career. From 1896 May wrote professionally to support herself and her mother. By the turn of the century she was producing not only poetry volumes but short stories, novels and some non-fiction. She was an active feminist and supporter of the Suffrage Movement, her literary talents help to shred ideas that the suffragists were driven by sexual frustration because of the shortage of men.

Her 1913 novel ‘The Combined Maze’, the story of a London clerk and the two women he loves, was highly praised by many, including George Orwell, while Agatha Christie considered it one of the greatest English novels of its time.

In 1914, she volunteered to join the Munro Ambulance Corps on the Western Front in Flanders. Although her time there was short-lived the experience was later reflected in both prose and poetry.

She published several poetry volumes as well as writing early criticism on Imagism and several poets of the movement. Her novels were now also influenced by modernist techniques and her supernatural short stories are increasingly seen as valuable additions to the genre.

From the late 1920s, she suffered from the onset of Parkinson's disease, and her writing career was effectively over.

May Sinclair died on the 14th November 1946. She was 83 and buried at St John-at-Hampstead's churchyard, London
