There are rooms best left unopened. In Rats, M. R. James guides us into one such space—silent, neglected, and waiting. Known for his restrained, academic horrors, James delivers here a tale that creeps up slowly and lingers uncomfortably. With a master's touch, he suggests far more than he shows, letting unease breed in the shadows and silence. This story is a quiet descent into something primal and cold, where the mundane turns menacing, and a moment's curiosity opens a door to ancient fear. Listen carefully—some noises can't be explained.

In the barren expanse of Truth or Consequences, where the horizon stretches like an endless canvas of desolation, a spectral awakening unfolds. Honthas emerge from a century-long slumber with an appetite for blood.
Bud, a man marked by the cruel hand of fate, seeks refuge from the haunting echoes of his past, stained with the violent memory of a love lost. His path converges with the gritty saga of a murder, a trigger pulled in haste at the entrance of a dive bar. United by circumstance, a fellowship emerges from the ashes – a tribe of indigenous survivors bound by a collective quest for survival. They grapple with the cryptic origins of the honthas, seeking wisdom from their elders.
In the American Southwest, where the arid winds whisper secrets and the land itself bears witness to untold tragedies, Bud and his newfound companions navigate the treacherous terrain of both the supernatural and the human soul. The journey becomes a harrowing dance between bloodlust and resilience, where the threads of fate are woven with the rugged strands of survival, friendship, and the eternal ache of grief.

    Author's Note:

This audiobook is narrated by an AI Voice.
A doctor who treats a person afflicted with leprosy using macabre methods is an unstable physician.
Although Rimel admitted that he wrote the story himself and Lovecraft only made stylistic corrections, the work is characterized by the very distinct style of the latter. Even though the writer from Providence congratulated his junior colleague on the text and claimed to have made only minor corrections, it could have been a typical courtesy on his part. A supporter of the hypothesis of Lovecraft's authorship is that Rimel did not create anything else in a similar style.

Although Katherine Mansfield was born in New Zealand in 1888, she spent much of her short life in England and on the Continent. As she wrote about the privileged worlds she encountered there, her stories quickly attracted literary attention. Prelude was hand-published by Leonard and Virginia Woolf at their Hogarth Press. Readers today still applaud the grace with which Mansfield fuses image, mood, and meaning.

Here are ten of Katherine Mansfield’s extraordinary tales. A whispered phrase, a ring twisting on a finger—each becomes a symbol for the broader emotional forces at work.

Included are: The Baron, The Modern Soul, Prelude, At the Bay, Bliss, The Man Without a Temperament, The Daughter of the Late Colonel, The Garden-Party, Miss Brill, and The Doll’s House.
