For months, Allied planners debated the best approach for opening a Western Front. The Soviets, engaged in brutal combat with German forces on the Eastern Front, pressured Britain and the United States to act quickly. Churchill, haunted by the disastrous Gallipoli campaign of World War I, feared the consequences of a premature landing. General Dwight D.
