Synopsis

In "The Influence of Sea Power on the French Revolution," Alfred Thayer Mahan examines the pivotal role of maritime dominance in shaping the political and military landscapes of the Revolutionary period in France. Mahan's work is characterized by his analytical rigor and masterful narrative style, intertwining strategic military analysis with historical events to illustrate how control of the seas influenced revolutionary outcomes. He carefully delineates the relationship between naval supremacy and national strength, grounding his exploration in a rich selection of historical anecdotes and empirical data, thereby situating his observations within a broader geopolitical context. Alfred Thayer Mahan was a prominent naval officer and historian whose experiences in the United States Navy profoundly informed his scholarly pursuits. His earlier works established his reputation as a leading theorist of sea power, and his acute awareness of maritime strategy and international relations led him to ponder how these elements shaped the turbulent era of the French Revolution. Mahan's academic background in military strategy, combined with his fascination for history, endowed him with the unique perspective needed to analyze the revolutionary dynamics of his time. This book is an essential read for scholars, historians, and military strategists alike. Mahan'Äôs penetrating insights into the interplay between naval power and revolution not only enrich our understanding of the French Revolution but also resonate with contemporary discussions about the strategic significance of sea power in global affairs. For anyone interested in the complexities of military history and its impact on socio-political shifts, Mahan'Äôs work remains a vital and compelling exploration.

An investigation into the nature of violence, terror, and trauma through conversations with a notorious war criminal and hero to white nationalists.

Between October 2014 and November 2016, global terrorism expert Jessica Stern held a series of conversations in a prison cell in The Hague with Radovan Karadzic, a Bosnian Serb former politician who had been indicted for genocide and other war crimes during the Bosnian War and who became an inspiration for white nationalists. Though Stern was used to interviewing terrorists in the field in an effort to understand their hidden motives, the conversations she had with Karadzic would profoundly alter her understanding of the mechanics of fear, the motivations of violence, and the psychology of those who perpetrate mass atrocities at a state level and who—like the terrorists she had previously studied—target noncombatants, in violation of ethical norms and international law.
How do leaders persuade ordinary people to kill their neighbors? What is the “ecosystem” that creates and nurtures genocidal leaders? Could anything about their personal histories, personalities, or exposure to historical trauma shed light on the formation of a war criminal’s identity in opposition to a targeted Other?
In My War Criminal, Jessica Stern brings to bear her incisive analysis and her own deeply considered reactions to her interactions with Karadzic, a brilliant and often shockingly charming psychiatrist and poet who spent twelve years in hiding, disguising himself as an energy healer, while also offering a deeply insightful and sometimes chilling account of the complex and even seductive powers of a magnetic leader—and what can happen when you spend many, many hours with that person.

In 1494, there were five sovereign regional powers in Italy: Milan, Venice, Florence, the Papal States and Naples. In 1536, only one remained: Venice. These decades of conflict precipitated great anxiety among Western thinkers, and Italians responded to the fragmentation, forevermore, of Latin Christendom, the end of self-governance for Italians, and the beginning of the early modern era in a myriad of ways. They were always heavily influenced by the lived experience of warfare between large Christian armies on the peninsula.
The diplomatic and military history of this 30-year period was a complex situation that one eminent Renaissance historian, Lauro Martines, has described as "best told by a computer, so many and tangled are the treatises, negotiations and battles." At the same time, the fighting went in tandem with the Renaissance and was influenced by it. Most historians credit the city-state of Florence as the place that started and developed the Italian Renaissance, a process carried out through the patronage and commission of artists during the late 12th century. If Florence is receiving its due credit, much of it belongs to the Medicis, the family dynasty of Florence that ruled at the height of the Renaissance. The dynasty held such influence that some of its family members even became Pope.
Meanwhile, plans for a French invasion were years in the making, and France’s young King Charles VIII, heavily influenced by chivalric tales and his men of finance, had begun his preparations for conquering Naples as a base from which to launch a crusade in 1491. Two key events were the catalysts for these plans. The first was the arrival of Cardinal Giuliano della Rovere at Avignon in May 1494.
