Synopsis

The anthology titled 'The French Revolution and Napoleon' serves as a profound exploration of the complex and transformative era spanning the late 18th and early 19th centuries. This collection brings together a spectrum of perspectives, from the philosophical musings of the Enlightenment to the concrete historical analysis of the period's political upheavals. Readers will encounter a tapestry of essays, treatises, and narrative reflections encompassing the democratic ideals, societal upheavals, and the complex legacy of Napoleon Bonaparte. Standout pieces within the anthology engage with the tumultuous transition from monarchy to republic, unraveling the crux of the revolutionary spirit without an explicit narrative bias. Bringing together the voices of eminent thinkers such as Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Alexis de Tocqueville, and Montesquieu, this collection is curated to offer a composite picture of intellectual and political thought that shaped and was shaped by revolutionary France. The inclusion of Charles Downer Hazen provides a historiographical perspective that complements the Enlightenment's philosophical richness. These authors, albeit from varying backgrounds and eras, come together to engage deeply with the intellectual currents of the Enlightenment and the concrete political shifts of the French Revolution. Their collective contributions illuminate the dynamic interplay between ideas and historical events. Readers will find in 'The French Revolution and Napoleon' an invaluable resource that traverses diverse literary styles and thematic inquiries. This anthology offers an unparalleled opportunity to delve into the ideological, political, and social reverberations of a pivotal historical juncture through a multiplicity of esteemed perspectives. It is indispensable for anyone seeking to understand the intricate web of thought and action that defined the era, providing a rich educational experience and fostering a nuanced dialogue among the collected works.

The popular psychoanalyst examines the continuing tension in our lives between the possibilities that freedom offers and the various limitations imposed upon us by our particular fate or destiny.

"May is an existential analyst who deservedly enjoys a reputation among both general and critical readers as an accessible and insightful social and psychological theorist . . . Freedom's characteristics, fruits, and problems; destiny's reality; death; and therapy's place in the confrontation between freedom and destiny are examined . . . Poets, social critics, artists, and other thinkers are invoked appropriately to support May's theory of freedom and destiny's interdependence." —Library Journal

"Especially instructive, even stunning, is Dr. May's willingness to respect mystery . . . There is, too, at work throughout the book a disciplined yet relaxed clinical mind, inclined to celebrate . . . what Flannery O'Connor called 'mystery and manners,' and to do so in a tactful, meditative manner." —Robert Coles, America

Samuel Ringgold Ward - A Life of...

Born on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, Samuel Ringgold Ward (1817–c. 1869) escaped enslavement and would become a leading figure in the struggle for Black freedom, citizenship, and equality. He was extolled by his contemporary Frederick Douglass for his "depth of thought, fluency of speech, readiness of wit, logical exactness." Until now, his story has been largely untold.

Ward, a newspaper editor, Congregational minister, and advocate for the temperance movement, was considered one of the leading orators of his time. After the passage of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 he fled to Canada, where he lectured widely to improve conditions for formerly enslaved people who had settled there. Ward then went to Britain as an agent of the Canadian Antislavery Society and published his influential book Autobiography of a Fugitive Negro. He never returned to the United States, and he died in obscurity in Jamaica.

Despite Ward's prominent role in the abolitionist movement, his story has been lost because of the decades he spent in exile. In this book, R. J. M. Blackett brings light to Ward's life and his important role in the struggle against slavery and discrimination, and to the personal price he paid for confronting oppression.

Mind Over Magick - Making Magick...

How do we know if magick is real? Wherever you find people, there are stories about magick. Some are myth or folklore, others are tales meant to thrill and intrigue us, and others still are accounts of actual magick, real spirits, and the energetic properties of our natural world. The question is whether or not any of it is true. Mind Over Magick by Tracy Nicholas tackles this complicated—and often personal—inquiry by picking apart what we know, what we don’t know, and what we can’t possibly know, leaving us with an evidence-based case for the existence of magick in our world. She demonstrates many instances:How the placebo effect shows us that we can heal our bodies with no mechanical interventionHow all living beings as well as the earth, stars, and planets have electromagnetic fields that interact on a regular basis and affect one anotherHow multiple animals and insects, such as the platypus or bees, can detect the energy around themThrough a mix of philosophy, science, and common sense, Mind Over Magick examines what we can infer about magick from what we already know to be true. Nicholas identifies the psychological need to believe in a magick that supernaturally fixes all of our problems without discounting the reality that magick is accessible to us all.
