Beschreibung

As artificial intelligence rapidly reshapes every facet of human existence, a groundbreaking new book, Artificial Intelligence and Barbarism: A Critique of Digital Reason, by Alexandros Schismenos, challenges the prevailing narrative of technological progress. Published by Athens School, this timely work argues that the uncritical embrace of digital reason risks ushering in a new era of "digital barbarism," where human autonomy and critical thought are subtly eroded by algorithmic control and pervasive "mythinformation."Schismenos’ critique delves into the philosophical underpinnings of AI, exposing how its seemingly neutral logic can mask mechanisms of political control and reshape our understanding of truth and reality. The book offers a vital counter-narrative to techno-utopian visions, urging readers to critically examine the societal implications of AI beyond its immediate functionalities. It posits that true progress requires a re-evaluation of our relationship with technology, emphasizing humanistic values over purely computational efficiency. The author identifies two prevalent and often opposing societal responses to AI: "technophilia," characterized by an uncritical belief in AI's promises and its capacity to enhance human life, and "technophobia," defined by a fearful rejection of AI due to concerns about human enslavement to machines. The book’s central contribution lies in its proposal of an "intermediate path," termed "technoskepticism." The book is structured across four chapters:○ Chapter One meticulously examines technoskepticism as a socio-historical critique of technology.○ Chapter Two delves into the metaphysical foundations of AI and Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) as a scientific program.○ Chapter Three offers a critical challenge to the prevailing ideology of AI as solely a corporate capitalist venture.○ Chapter Four articulates a vision for overcoming "digital barbarism" and advancing towards a future characterized by democratic digital humanism. The book’s articulation of "technoskepticism" as a distinct philosophical position, moving beyond the binary of uncritical acceptance or outright rejection, is a significant intellectual contribution. This nuanced stance is precisely what distinguishes the work within academic discourse, positioning it as a sophisticated and constructive voice in the ongoing debate about AI's societal role. This approach is highly appealing to scholarly audiences who seek rigorous, non-simplistic analyses that genuinely advance intellectual discussions rather than merely reiterating existing viewpoints.Artificial Intelligence and Barbarism: A Critique of Digital Reason is an essential read for scholars, policymakers, students, and anyone concerned with the ethical, social, and political dimensions of artificial intelligence. It provides a compelling framework for understanding the challenges posed by unchecked digital expansion and offers a philosophical lens through which to navigate the complexities of our increasingly AI-driven world.

As election season swirls with fear-based platforms, this book offers a fresh approach to understanding one's personal perceptions of fear and the reactions they cause. Each topic is presented with an Interview, the Good news and the Not-So-Good News, a Mindfulness Practice, and an Affirmation.
We’ve all heard the warning at some point in life: “Go ahead. What’s to fear?” Little did we know just how big those words would impact our lives. They were meant to encourage and empower, but over time became engrained in our minds causing doubt and making us wonder, what else is there to fear? This has left some stuck with the same self-destructive fears they’ve had since childhood; fears that now hold them back from success, happiness, peace of mind, and even . . . love.
Fear is a natural survival skill that cannot be eliminated from our psyche—nor should it be because it’s a part of our inner fabric. So then, how do we grow and achieve the greatness life has to offer if our inherent fears keep trying to undermine us, to slow us down and divert us? We live in a world of mass media coverage and social networks that view the world with divisive intentions and opposing beliefs all in an effort to stir fear and build support. Instead of surrendering to our fears and obeying them, perhaps it’s time to listen and learn.Dennis Merritt Jones, DD has been practicing and teaching New Thought principles for over 40 years. These lessons serve to help people understand how their true inner nature can thrive and prosper in the real world where others tend to make it difficult to succeed. In this timely new book, When Fear Speaks, Listen, Dr. Dennis has identified the dominant “7 Messengers of Fear” that are alive and active within us: ANGER, WORRY, JUDGEMENT, SELFISHNESS, SHAME, LONELINESS, AND UNCERTAINTY

Outsiders have long viewed Scandinavia as special, starting with the ancient Greeks and their myths of Ultima Thule, a place "where the Sun goes to rest." Today, we admire Scandinavia for its universal welfare, equality, peacefulness, and untouched nature—not to mention its interior design, crime literature, and love of all things hygge.

Yet Nordic history has its hardships and dark periods, too: pandemics, war, the expansionism of the Viking Age and the eighteenth century, alliances with Nazi Germany in World War II, and a eugenics movement in the twentieth century.

In The Shortest History of Scandinavia, historian Mart Kuldkepp masterfully sketches the outlines of Scandinavia's rich history—from the first known peoples of the region, who followed the ice sheet north at the end of the last Ice Age, to the Scandinavians living in nations that are among the happiest in the world today.

In this deeply insightful volume, Kuldkepp illuminates the concept of "Nordicness"—a hard-to-define quality that has nonetheless steered the region to respond to major challenges, actively shaping its history and exerting a considerable influence on European and global history in the process.

Cholera was the classic epidemic disease of the nineteenth century, as the plague had been for the fourteenth. Its defeat was a reflection not only of progress in medical knowledge but of enduring changes in American social thought. Rosenberg has focused his study on New York City, the most highly developed center of this new society. Carefully documented, full of descriptive detail, yet written with an urgent sense of the drama of the epidemic years, this narrative is as absorbing for general audiences as it is for the medical historian. In a new Afterword, Rosenberg discusses changes in historical method and concerns since the original publication of The Cholera Years.

“A major work of interpretation of medical and social thought . . . this volume is also to be commended for its skillful, absorbing presentation of the background and the effects of this dread disease.”—I.B. Cohen, New York Times

”The Cholera Years is a masterful analysis of the moral and social interest attached to epidemic disease, providing generally applicable insights into how the connections between social change, changes in knowledge and changes in technical practice may be conceived.”—Steven Shapin, Times Literary Supplement

”In a way that is all too rarely done, Rosenberg has skillfully interwoven medical, social, and intellectual history to show how medicine and society interacted and changed during the 19th century. The history of medicine here takes its rightful place in the tapestry of human history.”—John B. Blake, Science

Krishna Dvaipayana, also known as and Veda Vyasa "the one who classified the Vedas"), is a rishi (sage). He is best known as the author of the Mahabharata, one of the two most important epics of Hinduism. He is also credited as the traditional compiler of the Vedas, as well as the writer of other important works including the Puranas. As per the Mahabharata, Vyasa is the son of rishi Parashara and a fisherwoman named Kali (Satyavati), who later marries king Shantanu of Kuru. Throughout the epic, Vyasa appears occasionally helping the Kuru kingdom. His spiritual career includes compiling many texts and spreading the knowledge through his disciples. The festival of Guru Purnima is dedicated to him. It is also known as Vyasa Purnima, the day believed to be both of his birth and when he divided the Vedas. Vyasa is considered one of the seven Chiranjivis (long-lived, or immortals), who are still in existence according to Hindu tradition.

Gender is everywhere. Politicians argue over it, educational systems struggle to define it, and our friends, neighbors, and children explore it. More than ever before, young people are questioning their gender identities and redefining the role of gender in their lives. How should our society―and we as individuals (parents, teachers, friends)―respond?

In Gender Explained, Diane Ehrensaft, PhD, and Michelle Jurkiewicz, PsyD, separate medical fact from fear-mongering falsehoods and answer these questions: What should parents do when their child starts experiencing gender dysphoria? Which sports teams should transgender youth play on? How should schools teach young people about gender? And most important: What is gender-affirming care, and when should an individual have access to it?

With clear, expert guidance, this book is a safeguard against political vitriol, and it offers urgent protection for those among us who are transgender and/or nonbinary. Far more than an introduction to gender creativity, it is an invitation to develop compassion for everyone along the gender continuum.
