Synopsis

The Chilterns are at their best in May and The Old Forge Cafe is flourishing, which makes Charlie think about furniture that lives up to the standards her menu sets. Which is what persuades her to take on a job for a wealthy local businessman who suspects his daughter has fallen for a man who is not only a gold-digger but also a murderer.
To Charlie's surprise, she knows him – he's the Maitre d' at the Michelin-starred restaurant at the other end of the village. Does his charm conceal a killer?

YOU THINK YOU’VE HEARD MY STORY BEFORE…

At twenty-seven, I’m too young to be a widow. I’m trying my best to start over though: new city, new job running my own little shop. I try to fade into the background where I can, but the police won’t let me disappear completely. There are too many unanswered questions about the night my husband died.

    YOU THINK YOU KNOW ME…

I even have a new lodger, Elizabeth. She’s friendly, but definitely not a friend. Beautiful, too – tall and slim with the sort of swishy blonde hair I’ve always coveted. She smiles at me when we pass on the stairs. It occurs to me then that I don’t know the first thing about her.

    …BUT YOU’RE SO, SO WRONG.

If I were to tell you what happened to us next, you wouldn’t believe me. You might believe Elizabeth – she’s the type who people trust – until it’s too late.

I guess you’ll have to find out for yourself.

If you read one book this year, make it this one. A tense, gripping psychological thriller for anyone who raced through The Girl Before, Behind Her Eyes, or The Girl on the Train.

It's summer of 1899 and the state of Wyoming has been unresponsive for an increasingly alarming amount of time. No mail nor telegram communication has ever been sent out or responsive, which has prompted the United States Postal Inspection Service to investigate. The inspector general has selected US Postal Inspector Jed Pluck from Boston, Massachusetts to team up with another postal inspector named Louie Secoli to investigate these towns along the railroad. The peculiarity of this case, in contrast to others they had investigated previously, is that the only evidence they have is a strange, large black-red feather, sharp enough to slice through skin.
Leaving his family once again, Jed hitches the train with Louie, and they set off for Wyoming. Upon arriving in Cheyenne, they found Wyoming's capital deserted—and covered in the very same peculiar feathers. The next few towns along the railroad all share the same description: no bodies in sight and covered in the same feathers.
Only one town along the railway has been spared from the disappearances. Lemonstown, a town near the Red Desert, remains active but unaware of the fate of the other towns. Fearing that Lemonstown would be the next town to be raided, the two postal inspectors must solve the mystery of the strange creature and help the townspeople before Lemonstown becomes the next ghost town covered in feathers

Do you dare to question what’s real, who’s in charge—and what they’re willing to sacrifice to stay there?
Think Fargo meets Fight Club, with a dash of Bad Monkey and a side of Dexter. This story delivers sharp commentary and strange bedfellows: sophisticated internationalists, drone pilots in bunny slippers, assassins on banana seat bikes, and network news anchors with God complexes.
Meet Leroy O’Malley of Apalachicola, Florida: a naive and hopeful dreamer. All he wanted was a shot at the good life—a steady job, maybe even a dental plan.
This is the story of a man who made the mistake of believing the lies we are all told.
Always down on his luck, a chance encounter with a foul-mouthed - though oddly charismatic - out-of-towner at a roadside oyster shack suddenly launches Leroy on the fast-track to the life he’s always wanted.
But as the stakes rise, he finds himself swept into a tangled mess of black ops, corrupt officials, and media puppeteers who see him as the perfect fall guy. He thought he was chasing purpose and a 401K plan—until purpose chased him back with a surgical saw and an igloo cooler.
Will he choose himself or America?
The only way to find out is to read the series.

Certain of the great roads going north out of London continue far into the country a sort of attenuated and interrupted spectre of a street, with great gaps in the building, but preserving the line. Here will be a group of shops, followed by a fenced field or paddock, and then a famous public-house, and then perhaps a market garden or a nursery garden, and then one large private house, and then another field and another inn, and so on.
