Beschreibung

Alejandro Zambra's Ways of Going Home begins with an earthquake, seen through the eyes of an unnamed nine-year-old boy who lives in an undistinguished middleclass housing development in a suburb of Santiago, Chile. When the neighbors camp out overnight, the protagonist gets his first glimpse of Claudia, an older girl who asks him to spy on her uncle Raúl.In the second section, the protagonist is the writer of the story begun in the first section. His father is a man of few words who claims to be apolitical but who quietly sympathized—to what degree, the author isn't sure—with the Pinochet regime. His reflections on the progress of the novel and on his own life—which is strikingly similar to the life of his novel's protagonist—expose the raw suture of fiction and reality.Ways of Going Home switches between author and character, past and present, reflecting with melancholy and rage on the history of a nation and on a generation born too late—the generation which, as the author-narrator puts it, learned to read and write while their parents became accomplices or victims. It is the most personal novel to date from Zambra, the most important Chilean author since Roberto Bolaño.

A woman torn between two worlds, a forbidden attraction, and a love worth breaking all the rules for...
Nils Larssen may have started as a Swedish exchange student, but he now manages three of Hollywood's hottest rock clubs. Which leaves little time for a personal life. The last thing he expects is to be captivated by the grown-up version of his original host family's little girl. He knows he shouldn’t, given that he’s twelve years older and he’s sure her conservative parents wouldn’t approve. Still, it’s nearly impossible for him to resist temptation.

When she reconnects with her childhood crush, she discovers he's the only person who might accept both sides of her. But letting him in means risking everything — including the family who would disown her if they knew the truth.
As their passion ignites, Alexsis must decide between the life her parents demand and the love that sets her free. But when her carefully constructed double life starts to crumble, she pushes away the one person who sees her for who she really is. Can Nils break through her walls before she destroys their chance at happiness? And will Alexsis find the courage to choose love over lies before it's too late?
