Beschreibung

Between 1887 and 1891, Albert Millican made five trips to the orchid-rich areas of South America, concentrating on the Northern Andes. It was a time of orchid mania when a rare specimen could fetch around $25,000 in today's money. Prospectors shipped millions of orchid bulbs to Europe knowing less than one percent would survive the journey. The reasons for this sudden interest in orchids have several overlapping explanations: the ascension of the modern greenhouse; Darwin's work on the coevolution of insects and orchids; and a broader Victorian fascination with curios collected from around the world. In Millican’s book we get a first-hand look at what it took to locate, identify, and transplant these ephemeral beauties from the slopes of the Andes to a nation halfway across the globe.

The sixth man who walked on the moon shares his journey to the stars, into the mind, and beyond.
In February 1971, as Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell hurtled Earthward through space, he was engulfed by a profound sense of universal connectedness. He intuitively sensed that his presence and that of the planet in the window were all part of a deliberate, universal process, and that the glittering cosmos itself was, in some way, conscious. The experience was so overwhelming, Mitchell knew his life would never be the same.
For the next thirty-five years, he embarked on another journey, an inward exploration of the ineffable mystery of human consciousness and being. Mitchell left NASA to form the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS). There he initiated research in areas of study previously neglected by mainstream science and constructed a theory that could explain not only the mysteries of consciousness, but also the psychic event—what spiritualists call a “miracle” and scientists dismiss altogether.
Mitchell also created a new dyadic model of reality, revealing a self-aware universe not predetermined by the laws of physics, preordained by deities, or infinitely malleable. While human actions are generally subject to the laws of physics, these laws are also influenced by the mind.
From Outer Space to Inner Space traces two remarkable journeys—one through space and one through the mind. Together they fundamentally alter the way we understand the miracle and mystery of being, and ultimately reveal humankind’s role in its own destiny.
Previously published as The Way of the Explorer, this edition includes a new foreword by Avi Loeb, an afterword by Dean Radin, and a postscript chapter by the author.

It hit me the other day after publishing my one hundredth book on Amazon that I had authored enough books that I could easily publish a catalog of my favorites..
I checked and I'm the only author on Amazon today who can boast a catalog of all his greatest hits. I'm not bragging, nor do I expect to win the Nobel Prize for any of these great ideas, but that's not because they are not worthy of the great award, but because I have as yet to make any of them become household words or ideas. I hope your reading of this catalog will change all that and propel at least one of them up to the bight spotlight of nationally known and/or generally accepted ideas made from pure genius.

    Artificial General Intelligence...

Artificial intelligence surrounds us. More and more of the systems and services you interact with every day are based on AI technology. Most AI is narrowly specific; that is, it can only do a single thing, in a single context. For example, your spellchecker can't do mathematics, and the world's best chess-playing program can’t play Tetris. Human intelligence is different. We can solve a variety of tasks, including those we have not seen before. In Artificial General Intelligence, Julian Togelius explores technical approaches to developing more general artificial intelligence and asks what general AI would mean for human civilization.

Togelius starts by giving examples of narrow AI that have superhuman performance in some way. He then discusses what it would mean to have general intelligence, by looking at definitions from psychology, ethology, and computer science. Next, he explores the two main families of technical approaches to developing more general artificial intelligence: foundation models through self-supervised learning, and open-ended learning in virtual environments. The final chapters of the book investigate potential artificial general intelligence beyond the strictly technical aspects. The questions discussed here investigate whether such general AI would be conscious, whether it would pose a risk to humanity, and how it might alter society.

    Allergology - Allergies and...

Allergies are an overreaction of the immune system to substances that are typically harmless to most people. These substances, known as allergens, can include food, pollen, dust, pet dander, insect venom, and certain medications. When an allergic individual comes into contact with an allergen, their immune system mistakenly identifies it as a threat and triggers a defensive response. This response can range from mild symptoms, such as sneezing or a skin rash, to severe and potentially life-threatening reactions like anaphylaxis.
The immune system plays a central role in allergic reactions. Normally, it defends the body against harmful pathogens such as bacteria and viruses. However, in individuals with allergies, the immune system misidentifies allergens as dangerous invaders. The primary component involved in allergic reactions is Immunoglobulin E (IgE), a type of antibody that binds to specific allergens. This binding signals immune cells, such as mast cells and basophils, to release histamine and other inflammatory chemicals, leading to symptoms like swelling, redness, itching, and respiratory distress.
Allergic reactions are classified into different types based on the mechanism and timing of the immune response. Immediate hypersensitivity reactions occur within minutes of allergen exposure and are mediated by IgE. These reactions include hay fever, asthma attacks, and food allergies. Delayed hypersensitivity reactions, on the other hand, take several hours or even days to develop and involve different immune pathways, such as T-cell activation. Contact dermatitis, a reaction to certain chemicals or metals, is an example of a delayed allergic response.

With billions of active users across various platforms, businesses can tap into an enormous pool of potential customers, making social media a powerful tool for reaching targeted audiences and building lasting relationships.

At its core, social media marketing involves using platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, TikTok, and others to create and share content that promotes a brand, product, or service. This content can range from posts and images to videos, stories, and ads—all aimed at fostering engagement, driving traffic, and ultimately achieving business goals. Social media offers the unique advantage of real-time interaction, allowing businesses to directly communicate with their audience, receive immediate feedback, and respond to inquiries or concerns quickly.
