Synopsis

Nobody should have any illusions about the scale of the deceit that was practiced upon an unsuspecting British public during the 2016 referendum campaign, nor should anyone underestimate the extent of the damage that Brexit has caused, and will continue to cause for as long as it exists, to our country and its people. However, the beliefs and attitudes that brought about this calamity run much deeper, and stem primarily from the inability of many of our national leaders and much of our national media to recognise and adapt to the UK’s changing position during the post-World War Two era. These are the people and organisations that are mainly responsible for informing public opinion. Regrettably however, with certain honourable exceptions, they have frequently failed to provide sensible advice to the general public. In turn, these omissions and follies led eventually to the catastrophe that is Brexit.
Returning to a stable economic situation and to the great enterprise that is the European Union, and then building upon it, will not be easy, but it is a journey that must be attempted. Ideas for making the necessary transitions have been put forward here, and the author fervently hopes that as many people as possible will be ready to take them further.
***
The author first draws attention to the rarely acknowledged but serious error that the United Kingdom made in 1956, when it failed to opt for founder-membership of the European Economic Community. He then, in order to let the public have some information about him, provides personal details regarding himself, the area of east London where he was born and grew up, and his immediate family. From this point, the emphasis is entirely upon Brexit, about which he has many forthright and trenchant views, e.g. the way in which the 2016 referendum could and should have been avoided, the latter’s coverage on TV and radio, which left much to be desired, and the Brexiteer fantasies which are largely responsible for the economic damage that has ensued.
All of the main events concerning Brexit are covered, and a way out of the morass is advocated in the final chapter.

Global Poverty: Global poverty remains one of the most pressing challenges of our time, reflecting a deepening divide in the world’s wealth. Refugees: The refugee crisis is one of the most pressing humanitarian challenges of our time. Across the globe, millions of individuals are forced to flee their homes due to conflict, violence, persecution, and natural disasters. These displaced individuals, known as refugees, face an uncertain future, often enduring unimaginable hardships in their quest for safety and stability. As of recent estimates, more than 100 million people have been forcibly displaced, with a significant portion seeking refuge in countries that already face their own social, political, and economic challenges. The sheer scale and complexity of the crisis demand urgent attention from governments, international organizations, and civil society to find sustainable solutions.

This volume presents five major narratives that shaped the geopolitics and religious landscape of Europe and the Near East from the 8th to the 15th centuries.
The story of Joan of Arc brings to life the courage and mysticism of a teenage girl who led French forces to victory during the Hundred Years' War, claiming divine guidance in her quest to drive out the English. Her legacy endures as both a national heroine and a symbol of spiritual resistance.
The Albigensian Crusade explores a lesser-known but brutal campaign within Europe itself—where the Catholic Church sought to eradicate the Cathar heresy in southern France. It reveals the tangled web of religious persecution, regional power struggles, and papal authority.
The Crusades section covers the series of holy wars between Christian Europe and the Muslim world over control of Jerusalem and other sacred territories. From the First Crusade’s initial fervor to the eventual decline of Christian military ambitions in the East, this section paints a vivid portrait of religious zeal, political ambition, and cultural exchange.
The Battle of Tours recounts the pivotal clash in 732 between Frankish forces under Charles Martel and invading Muslim armies. Often hailed as a turning point that halted Islamic expansion into Western Europe, this battle shaped the future of European Christendom.
The Hundred Years' War examines the long, bitter struggle between England and France over territorial claims and dynastic rights. It highlights major battles, key figures like Edward the Black Prince, and the war’s impact on national identity and military tactics.
Together, these five accounts offer a compelling and detailed portrait of warfare in the medieval world—where faith, politics, and ambition collided on the battlefield, forging the course of European history.

    Free Speech and Turbulent...

    Michael J. Glennon

A vast censorship regime has smothered America's digital marketplace of ideas, squelching free speech on vital policy issues. Its supporters regard its benefits as morally and politically beyond question. They contend it's carried out by private social media platforms, not governmental authorities.

In Free Speech and Turbulent Freedom, Michael J. Glennon offers a timely and incisive response. The censors are short-sighted, he argues. Quibbling over outdated distinctions misses the real threat—which is the fusion of public and private power into a modern-day cartel able to overleap longstanding constitutional safeguards. American democracy, he argues, rests on a decentralized marketplace of ideas independent of the government. In crisp, trenchant terms, Glennon shows how concrete practical concerns justify protecting admittedly harmful online speech—even speech that advocates violence or embraces hatred or apparent falsehood.

To safely self-correct, democracy requires open channels of political communication. Glennon calls on the courts to unblock those channels—to measure such speech against enduring First Amendment precepts rather than pliable international norms—and to protect the speech interests not merely of the government and Big Tech, but of all participants in the marketplace of ideas.

The Trial of Julian Assange - A...

    Nils Melzer

In July 2010, Wikileaks published Cablegate, one of the biggest leaks in the history of the US military, including evidence for war crimes and torture. In the aftermath Julian Assange, the founder and spokesman of Wikileaks, found himself at the center of a media storm, accused of hacking and later sexual assault. He spent the next seven years in asylum in the Ecuadorian embassy in London, fearful that he would be extradited to Sweden to face the accusations of assault and then sent to US.

At this point, Nils Melzer, UN Special Rapporteur on Torture, started his investigation into how the US and UK governments were working together to ensure a conviction. His findings are explosive, revealing that Assange has faced grave and systematic due process violations, judicial bias, collusion and manipulated evidence. Melzer also gathered together consolidated medical evidence that proves that Assange has suffered prolonged psychological torture.

Melzer's compelling investigation puts the UK and US state into the dock, showing how, through secrecy, impunity and, crucially, public indifference, unchecked power reveals a deeply undemocratic system. Furthermore, the Assange case sets a dangerous precedent: once telling the truth becomes a crime, censorship and tyranny will inevitably follow.
