Synopsis

In "Nigeria and its Tin Fields," Albert Frederick Calvert offers a comprehensive exploration of Nigeria's rich mineral wealth, particularly focusing on the burgeoning tin mining industry in the early 20th century. The book intricately weaves together meticulous research and vibrant descriptions, illuminating not only the geological aspects of the tin fields but also their socio-economic impact on local communities. Calvert's observational prowess and vivid prose capture the complexities of colonial industry, revealing the tensions between the exploitation of resources and their implications for indigenous populations within a broader imperial context. Albert Frederick Calvert, an accomplished mining engineer and geologist, was profoundly influenced by his experiences in various mining ventures. His professional background equipped him with the technical acumen required to analyze environmental and economic conditions of Nigeria's tin fields. Furthermore, Calvert's exposure to colonial administration in the region shapes his nuanced perspective on the intersections of industry, culture, and colonialism, effectively recommending the importance of responsible governance in resource management. This book is an essential read for anyone interested in the historical dynamics of colonialism, resource extraction, and economic development in Africa. Scholars, students, and general readers alike will find Calvert's work not only informative but also an insightful examination of the intricate relationships between nature, industry, and society in Nigeria's evolving narrative.

Buddhism in its course of development has completed a form which distinguishes itself from its so-called primitive or original type—so greatly, indeed, that we are justified in emphasizing its historical division into two schools, Hinayana and Mahayana, or the Lesser Vehicle and the Greater vehicle of salvation. As a matter of fact, the Mahayana, with all its varied formulae, is no more than a developed form of Buddhism and traces back its final authority to its Indian founder, the great Buddha Sakyamuni.

The Ming Dynasty emerged from the ashes of the Yuan Dynasty, a Mongol-led empire that had ruled China for nearly a century. By the late 14th century, the Yuan government had become weak and corrupt, plagued by heavy taxation, famines, and widespread unrest. The Chinese population, weary of foreign rule, began to rise in rebellion. Among the many insurgent leaders, one man would rise to power and change the course of Chinese history—Zhu Yuanzhang.
Born into a poor peasant family, Zhu Yuanzhang experienced hardship early in life. Orphaned as a child, he spent years in a Buddhist monastery before joining the Red Turban Rebellion, a movement dedicated to overthrowing the Yuan. His military prowess and strategic mind quickly elevated him through the ranks. As he consolidated power, he systematically eliminated rival factions, eventually establishing himself as the dominant leader of the rebellion. In 1368, Zhu marched his forces into Beijing, forcing the last Yuan emperor to flee northward. Declaring the end of Mongol rule, he proclaimed himself emperor and founded the Ming Dynasty, choosing the name "Ming," meaning "brilliant" or "bright," to symbolize a new era of Chinese rule.
As the first Ming emperor, Zhu Yuanzhang, now known as the Hongwu Emperor, sought to restore Chinese traditions and repair the damage caused by Mongol rule. He reestablished Confucian principles as the foundation of government, reinstating the civil service examination system to ensure that officials were selected based on merit rather than birthright. He also implemented strict laws to reduce corruption, often resorting to harsh punishments to maintain order. His administration worked to rebuild agriculture, improve irrigation systems, and distribute land to farmers, strengthening the economy and ensuring food security.

In Ancient Mesopotamia, women in positions of royalty wielded significant power and influence, though their roles were often intertwined with the male-dominated political and religious systems. These women were not only important figures within their families and courts but also held sway over matters of governance, culture, and religion. The Mesopotamian concept of royalty was complex, encompassing both divine authority and political responsibility, and women in royal families were frequently called upon to uphold and represent these ideals.
One of the most prominent ways in which women in Mesopotamian royalty exercised their power was through marriage alliances. Royal women were often married to powerful kings or high-ranking officials, and these unions were strategically arranged to secure political stability, territorial expansion, and alliances between city-states. While the majority of these marriages were political in nature, some royal women were able to carve out roles of personal power and influence. For instance, Queen Shub-Ad, who ruled the Sumerian city-state of Ur, is believed to have held a direct and significant role in political decision-making during her reign. Her involvement in military campaigns, the construction of monumental architecture, and religious rituals showcases the multifaceted nature of female royal authority.
In addition to their marriages, royal women in Mesopotamia often took on important religious roles. Many queens and princesses served as high priestesses, a position that not only gave them spiritual authority but also political power. Priestesses were central figures in the worship of the gods, and as such, they were deeply connected to the divine. Enheduanna, the daughter of the Akkadian king Sargon, is one of the most well-known royal women from Mesopotamian history.

The masochistic Lady Bridgette Donahue is Doctor Damian Thatch's favorite patient, but since she is a married woman he must contain his passions when with her. Desiring a partner without limitations, Damian frequents Madame Q's nunnery, a high-end London brothel which provides the services of dolly mops for gentlemen with sadistic tastes. A dolly mop is a girl in domestic service, such as a maid or a nanny, who in order to earn a little extra money beyond her regular employment chooses to become a prostitute. Unlike a full time brothel worker who cannot afford to be left in a condition which might render her unable to entertain gentlemen for a few days, a dolly mop can easily keep marks hidden in her regular job and take the time to recover before returning to brothel work.
Yet in spite of the liberties he is able to take with prostitutes, Damian’s arousal and subsequent release with them is never as grand as when he is with the submissive Lady Bridgette. Purchasing pleasures deprives Damian of the authenticity his sadism requires.
But when Damian notices that a new dolly mop is actually Rosie, his own parlor maid, he realizes that he may have found a potential solution to his frustration. When he confronts Rosie she chooses to take the option of being trained to satisfy his desires rather than face immediate termination of employment. Now Damian will turn Rosie into his ideal submissive, subjecting her to bondage, birching, and a variety of sex acts including performing with Lady Bridgette.
