~~~~~ Excerpt ~~~~~
“So…” Polly prompted. “Why are you here?”
A deep breath. Missy's words came in a burst. “Why do you hate me so much?”
“I don’t…”
“Don’t give me that bull!” Missy flared. “You do. You can barely stand to be in the same room with me. You don’t think I notice the way you always find some excuse to not talk to me, to not sit close to me? Even the other night, when I showed you my engagement ring. You looked like someone had handed you a bowlful of slugs.”
Polly blinked. Was it really that obvious? Ronnie had hinted it was, true. And so had Neil a time or two. But… “Maybe we should sit down and talk about it.”
“And maybe we can cut the b.s. right now.” Melissa set her fists on her slim hips. “Hell, Polly. The way you treat Ronnie most of the time, you should be glad I’m marrying him.”
“And did you ask Ronnie about it?”
“Yeah.” An angry hand-flip. “He told me I should talk to you.”
Brave Sir Robin ran away. Bravely ran away, away. When danger reared its ugly head, he bravely turned his tail and fled. Yes, brave Sir Robin turned about, and gallantly he chickened out…
“What’s so funny?” Missy demanded. From her expression, she was about ten seconds away from a shrieking fit, or actually punching Polly in the throat.
Oh, hell. Let me handle this, you fool. You’ll only screw it up.
Candi Cane surged into the forefront of her mind. The horny, slutty alter-ego to Polly Prude.
Almost without volition, Polly’s bearing altered. Her back arched subtly, drawing attention to her chest, while one hip cocked to the side. Her lips parted slightly, and even her voice took on a lower, huskier pitch. “Ronnie couldn’t tell you. Because Ronnie didn’t know.”
Missy blinked, taken aback by this sudden change. “Didn’t know what?”
Polly stepped close. Too close. Missy made to draw away, but a hand on her hip stopped her. “Didn’t know,” Polly whispered, “that I was jealous. Didn’t know that I think you’re one of the sexiest women I’ve ever seen in my life.”
    The Tenmei era, spanning from 1781 to 1789, marked one of the most tumultuous periods in early modern Japanese history. Under the rule of the Tokugawa shogunate, Japan faced a complex web of challenges that created the perfect storm for one of the country’s most devastating famines. The political leadership at the time struggled to manage internal pressures, while nature unleashed a series of disasters that exposed deep structural weaknesses in Japanese society and governance.
    Politically, the Tokugawa regime was already under strain. After more than 150 years of relative stability, cracks had begun to appear in the shogunate’s centralized control. Corruption was increasingly evident among regional officials, and the rigid class system left little room for social mobility or adaptive governance. Daimyōs, or feudal lords, often prioritized local interests over national concerns, making unified responses to crises difficult. These issues weakened the ability of the central government to respond decisively to the hardships that were beginning to unfold.
    Economically, Japan in the late 18th century was a fragile system, heavily reliant on rice production. Despite modest attempts at economic reform, the country remained vulnerable to crop failure, inflation, and regional imbalances. Merchant classes were rising in wealth and influence, while peasants bore the brunt of heavy taxation and poor harvests. The disconnect between economic policy and rural reality would prove fatal when disaster struck.
    In terms of geopolitics, perhaps the most seminal event of the Middle Ages was the successful Ottoman siege of Constantinople in 1453. The city had been an imperial capital as far back as the 4th century, when Constantine the Great shifted the power center of the Roman Empire there, effectively establishing two almost equally powerful halves of antiquity’s greatest empire. Constantinople would continue to serve as the capital of the Byzantine Empire even after the Western half of the Roman Empire collapsed in the late 5th century. Naturally, the Ottoman Empire would also use Constantinople as the capital of its empire after their conquest effectively ended the Byzantine Empire, and thanks to its strategic location, it has been a trading center for years and remains one today under the Turkish name of Istanbul.
    The Ottoman conquest of Constantinople also played a decisive role in fostering the Renaissance in Western Europe. The Byzantine Empire’s influence had helped ensure that it was the custodian of various ancient texts, most notably from the ancient Greeks, and when Constantinople fell, Byzantine refugees flocked west to seek refuge in Europe. Those refugees brought books that helped spark an interest in antiquity that fueled the Italian Renaissance and essentially put an end to the Middle Ages altogether.
    In the wake of taking Constantinople, the Ottoman Empire would spend the next few centuries expanding its size, power, and influence, bumping up against Eastern Europe and becoming one of the world’s most important geopolitical players. It was a rise that would not truly start to wane until the 19th century, and the Ottomans would maintain their empire until the end of World War I.
