So he drove around the neighborhood and parked six blocks away, behind a dumpster at the grade school both he and Hailey had attended when they were younger. No one would ever look for his car there. Then he approached Carol’s house from the opposite direction. Still, he felt horribly exposed as he got close, as if everyone in the neighborhood was looking out their windows with disapproving stares. Excitement gripped his belly as he strode up the front walk. This was either going to be the stupidest thing he ever did, or one of the best afternoons of his life. But whatever it was, it was going to be interesting. His finger hesitated over the doorbell. Then remembering Carol’s instructions, he turned the doorknob and simply let himself in. She was waiting for him. He took her in for one shattered second, then whipped his head around, staring at the windows. Luckily, the shades were drawn, so no one could see what he did.
