  A collection of 18 pieces of writing, Shoes and Stockings by Louisa May Alcott comes with stories about war, love and other important topics, making readers laugh at times, bringing them to tears at other times, and always getting them to contemplate.    Louisa May Alcott was one of the most prolific American writers of the 19th century. She wrote novels and poems, and she published her letters written to her family while she was recovering from typhoid after she had started work as a nurse during the Civil War.She also wrote critical articles about hospital management and about the problems she encountered while she was working as a nurse, but what made her name widely known was her short stories.    Many of the female characters in the Shoes and Stockings stories are in fact figures inspired by the author's own life. Alcott's work was largely influenced by her education and her path in life – in her youth, she received education not only from her father, but also from Nathaniel Hawthorne, Ralph Waldo Emerson and other influential figures of the age who were all family friends of the Alcotts.    Louisa May had to start earning her own money at a very young age – she worked as a seamstress, a governess and a teacher, too, experiences that appear in her writing as well. She was also an abolitionist, one of the first feminist writers of her times and a supporter of women's suffrage. She never married and never had children, but she knew and loved children – affection she expressed in her numerous children's stories.    This collection contains stories written for adults, young and old alike, and it includes two of Alcott's most popular pieces, a light-hearted story entitled Kitty's Class Day and Aunt Kipp, another masterfully written story about family and money (or rather, the lack of it).

  The Odyssey is one of two major ancient Greek epic poems attributed to Homer. It is one of the oldest extant works of literature still widely read by modern audiences. As with the Iliad, the poem is divided into 24 books. It follows the Greek hero Odysseus, king of Ithaca, and his journey home after the Trojan War. After the war itself, which lasted ten years, his journey lasted for ten additional years, during which time he encountered many perils and all his crewmates were killed. In his absence, Odysseus was assumed dead, and his wife Penelope and son Telemachus had to contend with a group of unruly suitors who were competing for Penelope's hand in marriage.The Odyssey was originally composed in Homeric Greek in around the 8th or 7th century BCE and, by the mid-6th century BCE, had become part of the Greek literary canon. In antiquity, Homer's authorship of the poem was not questioned, but contemporary scholarship predominantly assumes that the Iliad and the Odyssey were composed independently, and the stories themselves formed as part of a long oral tradition.  Scholars still reflect on the narrative significance of certain groups in the poem, such as women and slaves, who have a more prominent role in the epic than in many other works of ancient literature. This focus is especially remarkable when considered beside the Iliad, which centers on the exploits of soldiers and kings during the Trojan War.The Odyssey is regarded as one of the most significant works in the Western canon. The first English translation of the Odyssey was in the 16th century. Adaptations and re-imaginings continue to be produced across a wide variety of mediums.   The Field Bazaar is a short story by Arthur Conan Doyle, first published on November 20, 1896 in a special "Bazaar Number" of The Student, a publication of the students' representative council at Edinburgh University. It is a Sherlock Holmes story, published under Conan Doyle's byline and featuring both Holmes and his partner, Dr. John Watson. It is, however, treated by most experts as a parody or pastiche not suitable for inclusion in the traditional 60-story canon of Sherlock Holmes, though there are dissenters.Watson narrates "The Field Bazaar"—which mirrors the reality of Conan Doyle's gift of the story to The Student—from a first-person perspective.The story opens with Holmes and Watson at breakfast in the sitting-room of their residence at 221B Baker Street. Holmes infers from a handful of clues that an envelope Watson is holding contains an invitation to "help in the Edinburgh University Bazaar." He then concludes, to Watson's astonishment, "that the particular help which you have been asked to give was that you should write in their album, and that you have already made up your mind that the present incident will be the subject of your article." Holmes then returns to reading his morning newspaper.
