Synopsis

Most rock ’n’ roll books are a bore. They all have the same narrative arc and are aimed at the dwindling following that now follows an artist that has long passed their AARP date.

Sound N’ Fury does not have a story arc. It is a collection of anecdotes, like a record comprised of various tracks — each one has its point and purpose. Alan Niven, who guided Guns N’ Roses from the gutter of Los Angeles to Wembley Stadium, shares stories from his remarkable life as a manager with an immediacy delivered by an extraordinary recall of dialogue. Readers will encounter not just Guns N’ Roses (who have sold almost 10 million tickets to their shows) but The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, Clarence Clemons, Whitesnake, Elton John, and others who came from humble origins and experienced fame known only to few. Small-town minds collided with worldwide adulation, expectations, and demands. The results are amusing, affirming, and, predictably, disastrous. Keep in mind that rock ’n’ roll is God’s occupation for the unemployable.

Written with a crisp and fluid style, the magnificence and idiocy of the music world will dance off the pages and engross even those who are not rock fans.

When Sven Odia began his career at Engel & Völkers, the most important items in his office were a fax machine and a photocopier, which he used to create exposés by hand. Twenty-seven years later, Sven Odia has achieved what many dream of: starting as an apprentice at Engel & Völkers, he has had a remarkable career in the real estate industry and has worked his way to the top of the company. He took on responsibility early on and started as an entrepreneur within the company. His masterpiece: building the Engel & Völkers licensing business abroad. Odia has thus played a decisive role in shaping the fortunes of the real estate company: from its beginnings in Mallorca to its expansion into the USA – with courage, vision and hard work, Odia conquered new markets.

In his book, he shows what good leadership is all about and wants to empower people to write their own success stories. His credo: people don't follow brands or companies, they follow people! A performance-enhancing corporate culture only works if it is exemplified by management day after day. Odia openly and honestly shows how he has dealt with crises, what an immensely important role culture plays in a company, and how executives effectively initiate real change. A must-read for all executives and those who aspire to write their own success story.

During Mardi Gras 1973, Stewart Butler (1930–2020) fell in love with Alfred Doolittle—a wealthy socialite and schizophrenic from San Francisco. Their relationship was an improbable love story that changed the course of LGBTQ+ history. With Doolittle's money, Butler was able to retire and devote his life to political activism in the cause of queer liberation. A survivor of the horrific Up Stairs Lounge arson, Butler was a founding member of the first statewide lesbian and gay rights organization in Louisiana and an early champion for transgender rights, playing a key role in the eight-year struggle to persuade PFLAG to become the first national LGBTQ+ organization to include trans people in its mission statement.

In Political Animal: The Life and Times of Stewart Butler, author Frank Perez traces Butler's amazing life from his early childhood in Depression-era New Orleans, his adolescence at Carville where his father worked, his first unsuccessful attempt at college, his time in the army as a closeted gay man, his adventures in Alaska, his transformation into a hippie in the 1960s, his love affair with Doolittle, his decades as a gay rights advocate, and ultimately, his twilight years as an elder statesman.

Based on Butler's own personal papers, including hundreds of letters, and dozens of interviews, Political Animal paints an intimate portrait of a legendary figure in gay politics and the times in which he lived.
