Synopsis

With the overwhelming pace of life, many of us struggle to stop long enough to be present. Our long to-do lists and full calendars leave little breathing room to hear from God. We know we need to slow down but we don't even know how to begin.
Alan Fadling has spent years coaching leaders and communities on how to live an unhurried life, teaching that productivity and success are not our chief end, but rather living at the pace that our true self longs to live. Designed to help you center your day around God's loving presence, A Year of Slowing Down offers six devotionals for each week of the year. Each day begins with a Scripture passage followed by a short reading and a reflection question.
This book is an invitation to slow down and be present to the movement of God in your everyday life. Will you accept God's call to welcome a year of slowing down?

Do you want to know and love God more deeply? Read theology every day. When peace seems far from us and when true rest doesn’t come, we don’t need more to-dos on our list or a set of step-by-step instructions to help us get there on our own. True peace, hope, and rest only comes by spending time in the presence of God. Spend 90 days in His Word focused on who God is and what He is like and find that He is worthy to be trusted at every twist or turn of life. He is better than our minds can imagine, in control of all things, and infinitely good. As you do, you will: find peace in His sovereign care enjoy security in His promise of eternity experience joy in His great love for you rest in the God who never sleeps trust God for your every need find comfort in His Spirit learn to live out your faith as an overflow of His glorious grace God is the sustainer of the rhythms of the skies and seasons, as well as the intricate rhythms of our lives. To dwell in His presence is the promise of salvation, the abundant life in Christ today, and the eternal life with Him in the future. While the ways of the world lead to death, His invitation is to come and live. He truly is our highest good.

No one is a stranger to loneliness. Despite how social we are via text, chat, and notifications, we are far from being truly connected. We all want someone else to really see us and choose us for who we are. We want a place to finally fit in. But what if finding the right people or the right place is not the answer?

From her community-building background, Sarah E. Westfall takes our longing to belong as an invitation to embrace and extend the deep love of God. After years contemplating how she fit in and trying to earn acceptance, she realized "belonging is not something to attain, but someone to become." Through narrative, research, Scripture, and spiritual practice, she teaches how belonging is a way of being—a posture of welcome in the spirit of the Father who extends his arms to those returning and those who don't yet know they've resisted his love.

Whether you understand the perspective of the outsider in need of acceptance well or you're eager to include, the barriers to belonging can come down as Sarah gently guides us toward deep connection—a connection where our humanity draws us closer to people and envelops us in the heart of God. Embark with Sarah on this challenge that will awaken your empathy and affirm you with the truth of these words: "You are welcome."

When the Late Bronze Age system of the Near East collapsed around the year 1200 BCE, the empires and kingdoms that had ruled the region for hundreds of years were replaced by new dynasties and peoples. In some cases – such as in Egypt, Assyria, and Babylon – new dynasties came to power that followed the culture and styles of previous generations. However, alongside them new ethnic groups also came to power, some of whom took advantage of the general chaos following the Bronze Age collapse to migrate to the region. Some of these new waves of migrants entered the Near East from Europe via the Mediterranean Sea and Anatolia, while others came from Arabia. They all brought with them new weapons, ideas, and plenty of new people that eventually helped establish a new, early Iron Age order in the Near East. Among these new groups that came to prominence in the early Iron Age Near East, the Arameans were arguably the most important.
The Arameans entered the historical record just after the collapse of the Bronze Age, and although they were once thought to be one of the factors in the Bronze Age collapse, most scholars now see them as taking advantage of the situation more than bringing it about. Once the Arameans entered the Levant and Mesopotamia, they influenced their new homes to varying degrees, ranging from having little influence in southern Mesopotamia to being a major geopolitical player in the inland Levant. An examination of Aramean history and culture reveals that the Arameans were a people who were not so easy to define, as they had no central leadership, and they often adopted the cultural attributes of their neighbors. With that said, historians, archaeologists, and philologists have identified a definite Aramean culture that at times played a major role in the wider cultural events of the Near East.
