Synopsis

Life Among the Willows: Postcards from My Childhood is an intimate andluminous collection of memories based on the author’s childhood in ruralChile and spanning the late 1960s through the early 1980s. Like cinematicvignettes, the author brings to life—with humor, tenderness, and precision—the places, people, the events that shaped his early years. Though the stories—woven in beautiful, evocative prose—do not dwell on the turbulent politicalevents before and during the military dictatorship, they nevertheless shapedthe human landscape they portray. Equally present is Chile’s transformationfrom a small, rural country into a modern, cosmopolitan society—a nostalgicpast still near in years but already fading from collective memory. Withempathy and keen observation, the author intertwines vibrant anecdotes withthe harsh realities of the time, balancing dark humor with imagination, nostalgia, and compassion. Each story stands as a small moral fable, andtogether they form a poignant meditation on the passage from innocence toexperience. The echoes of this exquisite book linger long after the final page, not only for its magnificent stories but for the generosity of its gaze and thecompassion with which it rescues a world that still breathes among theweeping willows.

When bigotry and power-mania take control, disaster always follows for subjugated persons - even when the power is wielded by the Church.

Witchcraft was viewed as devil-worship. Between 1450 and 1750, one hundred thousand people were accused, subject to the most bestial tortures and usually executed. Witches examines the wildfire-spread of witch hunting across Europe and America, revealing the disturbing and brutal realities of these witch hunts and their roots in misogyny and religious persecution.

    It includes:
    • Letters and trial testimonies from those charged with witchcraft, as well as some from self-proclaimed witches
    • Biographic detail of key witch hunters, such as Matthew Hopkins (the so-called Witchfinder General) who was responsible for hundreds of executions
    • Accounts of famous witch trials, from Chelmsford to Salam

Nigel Cawthorne doesn't shy away from the violent details of this persecution, exploring the events as they transpired, the contexts that triggered them and tracing it back to its source.

Chorology, the study of the geographical distribution of organisms, offers crucial insights into how life is spread across the planet. This scientific discipline examines the patterns, processes, and factors that determine where species occur and why they are found in particular regions. From dense tropical rainforests to arid deserts and remote island ecosystems, chorology helps explain the complex relationships between organisms and their environments. Understanding these distributions is essential not only for ecological research but also for conservation efforts, climate change studies, and predicting future biodiversity trends.
The origins of chorology date back to early explorations and observations of naturalists who noted how plants and animals varied across regions. Over time, with advancements in biology, geography, and technology, chorology has developed into a distinct field of study. It now integrates concepts from ecology, evolution, geology, and climatology to provide a comprehensive understanding of how species disperse, adapt, and thrive in diverse environments. By identifying distribution patterns, chorologists can trace the historical movements of species, understand their evolutionary relationships, and predict how current and future environmental changes might alter these patterns.
One of the fundamental aspects of chorology is recognizing that species distributions are influenced by a combination of environmental, biological, and historical factors. Climate, topography, soil composition, and availability of resources play significant roles in determining where species can survive and reproduce. Additionally, interactions such as competition, predation, and symbiosis shape the presence or absence of species in particular areas.

    How Polarization Begets...

Extreme polarization in American politics is perhaps the most confounding political phenomenon of our time. This book binds together polarization in Congress and polarization in the electorate within an ever-expanding feedback loop. This loop is powered by the discipline exerted by the respective political parties on their Congressional members and district candidates and endorsed by the voters in each Congressional district who must choose between the alternatives offered. Tight national party discipline produces party delegations in Congress that are widely separated from one another but each ideologically narrowly distributed.

As district constituencies become more polarized and are egged on by activists, parties are further motivated to appeal to their respective bases rather than to voters in the ideological center. America has indeed acquired parties with clear platforms—once thought to be a desirable goal—but these parties are now feuding camps. What resolution might there be? Just as the progressive movement slowly replaced the Gilded Age, might a new reform effort replace the current squabble? Or could an asymmetry develop in the partisan constraints that would lead to ascendancy of the center, or might a new and over-riding issue generate a cross-cutting dimension, opening the door to a new politics? Only the future will tell.
