Beschreibung

It's 1902 and Daniel has left a life of luxury in New York to run his late uncle's bakery in Milford, Pennsylvania. Though he's made many friends in the small town, not everything has been rosy. His uncle's outstanding loan has fallen upon his shoulders and he could lose the bakery if he doesn't pay it back in time. Additionally, Daniel feels that lecherous loan officer Simon Prickson is actively trying to make it harder for him to repay his debt.

Furthermore, not everyone in Milford likes him. Adrian Dane, the cantankerous town blacksmith, seems to hate Daniel, and he has no idea why. Though Daniel finds Adrian irritating in every way, the two can't manage to stay away from each other. Will Daniel ever figure out what he's done to upset the inscrutable man? Can either find the companion they so desperately need?

If wrong place, wrong time was a person, it would be me.

I was the king of it. As a child, I stepped into our garage moments before it was hit by lightning and lost my sense of smell. When I was a student, I walked in on a classmate changing their grades moments before they were caught, resulting in my expulsion. After my first real job promotion, I went to dinner to celebrate and saw my boss cheating on his husband with his personal assistant and I got fired.

And now? Now I'm in the worst place of all: behind a dumpster as someone is murdered. If I get caught, it won't be as simple as finding a new school or another position, I'll be dead. So what do I do? I shift into my cat form and crawl underneath the dumpster, hoping for the best.

If "the best" is one of the murderers coming over and telling me I need to come with him, that is. I go. I should be scared, petrified even, but I'm not. Instead, I jump right into his arms and start purring. What is wrong with my cat?

    Contains mature themes.

“Moore traces the contours of shadow without ever letting us forget the transformative power of light.” —Kaethe Schwehn, author of The Rending and the Nest
In this unique and honest coming-of-age story, young artist Molly Fisher predicts another boring summer at her family cabin on Cloud Lake in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York, until, weeks before her sixteenth birthday, a boating accident almost causes her little brother's death. Sam is in a coma, and Molly's family, unraveled by tragedy, blames her. Overcome with grief and guilt, Molly befriends a newcomer to the lake, Zoe Novato, a waterskiing champion whose frank interest both unsettles and delights Molly. From best friends, the unthinkable happens: Molly falls in love with Zoe.  In the midst of escalating family tragedy, Molly's journey of discovery unexpectedly becomes a path of redemption for both her parents, bringing their family from lost to found. The transcendent ending shows the power of young love to heal old wounds and allow a deeper forgiveness. Qualities of Light explores the budding of unexpected romance in the face of family tragedy, the forging of a new relationship between a daughter and her gifted, difficult parents, and an adolescent girl's confrontation with her own qualities of light and darkness.
