Beschreibung

Market Trading Life explores the vital role of local markets and family businesses in shaping communities, particularly in an era dominated by globalization. It examines how these seemingly simple acts of buying and selling are deeply intertwined with social structures and cultural practices, fostering social cohesion and economic resilience. These markets often serve as more than just economic hubs; they are vital social spaces where relationships are built and cultural identities are maintained. The book reveals how family-owned businesses operate, the influence of family dynamics on their sustainability, and the unique challenges faced by small-scale traders.

The book presents a comprehensive analysis, starting with an introduction to market exchange systems and family roles, then delves into key aspects of local commerce. Through ethnographic research, case studies, and quantitative data analysis, the book provides a holistic perspective on local commerce. For instance, the research highlights the significant roles of women in local commerce and the ways communities adapt to changing economic landscapes. It also incorporates narratives from traders and community members, providing insights into their daily lives and challenges.

The book offers valuable insights for academics, policymakers, and community organizers interested in promoting community development, supporting small-scale businesses, and preserving cultural heritage. While not advocating specific policies, Market Trading Life presents actionable strategies for fostering more equitable and sustainable local economies, contributing to debates about globalization's impact and the importance of social capital.

Explore the Cosmic Blueprint of Western Philosophy.
In The Timaeus, Plato offers one of the most influential philosophical visions of the ancient world—a sweeping dialogue that lays out the structure of the cosmos, the nature of the soul, and the divine intelligence behind creation.
Presented as a conversation between Socrates, Timaeus the Pythagorean philosopher, Critias, and Hermocrates, this work bridges mythology and metaphysics, blending Greek thought with early scientific speculation. Timaeus explains the origins of the universe as the deliberate design of a benevolent "Demiurge" who imposes order on chaos, crafting the world with mathematical harmony and eternal forms as its template.
This foundational work of natural philosophy includes:
The geometric and mathematical structure of reality
The soul of the universe and how it animates all things
The elements—earth, air, fire, and water—and their divine ratios
The origins of time, space, and human beings
Plato’s cosmological theory that would shape science, theology, and esotericism for centuries
Whether you are a student of philosophy, a seeker of metaphysical truths, or a lover of ancient wisdom, The Timaeus opens a door to understanding the cosmos through the lens of one of history’s greatest minds.

An enthralling and vivid portrait of Queen Catherine of Braganza, wife of Charles II, that reveals her forgotten place in history.

A long-overlooked figure in history, Catherine has a crucial place in the history of the British Empire: she may have failed to produce an heir to the throne, but her marriage to Charles in 1662 marked a key turning point in Britain's imperial ascendancy, for part of her dowry was Bombay, Britain's first territory of the Indian subcontinent. Catherine also was highly influential in the worlds of fashion, Baroque art and music, and food and culture. She popularized tea drinking, bringing England's national drink into fashion for the first time. Her life was at the nexus of Old and New Worlds, war and exploration, frivolity, and scientific inquiry.

Noteworthy in its scope and approach to sources, The Lost Queen combines personal and political accounts, offering a lively portrait of Catherine's life, and the wider politics and explorations of her time.

Reports From The First World War...

    Lord Dunsany

Includes the collections Nowadays, Tales of War, & Unhappy Far-Off Things The great fantasy writer Lord Dunsany wrote very little in the way of fantasy after the onset of the First World War. This was partly because he was busy, having volunteered in 1915 and becoming a Captain in the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers in Derry. However, the reality of the world bore in on our hero at this time, and it is not difficult to imagine that his heart moved to more serious concerns.Dunsany’s days of high fantasy, it seems, ended with the emergence of civil unrest in his nation. This is why the non-fiction section is included at the end of this collection; while he wrote the odd fantasy work in later years, they were written by a distinctly different man, with a very different life. For a week, he lay in a hospital bed, listening to the sounds of the riots as the British forces became increasingly violent and shelled the centre of Dublin with artillery. His military belt was left in the hospital, and eventually buried with the Nationalist leader Michael Collins. This, it seems, was the trigger for his change of heart, as expressed in ‘Nowadays’, towards poetry as the essence of writing. “In January 1917, under the stimulant of shellfire, I turned to poetry and wrote two poems in Plug-Street Wood”.After initially being refused forward positioning, he eventually served in the trenches. In this time, his literary output was focused on writing propaganda material for the War Office, some of which is collected in the non-fiction section of this volume.
