Synopsis

'SOS What' offers a fascinating exploration of humanity's most recognized distress signal, tracing its evolution from a simple maritime emergency code to a cornerstone of global emergency communications. The book masterfully weaves together the technical, historical, and cultural aspects of SOS, demonstrating how three dots, three dashes, and three more dots in Morse code transformed into a universal symbol for urgent help across maritime, aviation, and terrestrial applications.

Through meticulous research and comprehensive analysis, the book reveals how the 1906 Berlin Radio Conference's adoption of SOS as the international distress signal set the foundation for modern emergency response systems. The text expertly navigates through three major sections, beginning with the technical evolution of SOS from its Morse code origins to contemporary digital formats, followed by its standardization in international protocols, and concluding with its adaptation into modern satellite and cellular networks.

What sets this book apart is its interdisciplinary approach, connecting emergency communications with international law, radio engineering, and social psychology. Written in an accessible yet technically precise style, it serves both as a professional reference for emergency response personnel and as an engaging read for those interested in communication systems and safety protocols.

The book's examination of current debates about traditional distress signals in the digital age, supported by real-world case studies and technical specifications, makes it particularly relevant for understanding the future of emergency communications.

The world is increasingly vulnerable to a wide array of disasters, both natural and man-made, that threaten our lives, economies, and ecosystems. These crises, which range from catastrophic earthquakes to the far-reaching impacts of climate change, have become more frequent, intense, and interconnected. While the planet has always been subject to the forces of nature, human activity has amplified many of these events, while also introducing new, unprecedented risks. Natural disasters, like hurricanes, wildfires, and floods, have become an inevitable part of the global landscape, but they are now exacerbated by the ongoing environmental degradation we’ve caused. Likewise, man-made calamities, from industrial accidents to nuclear disasters, have demonstrated how human innovation can have disastrous consequences when not properly managed.

The interwoven nature of these crises has led to a compounded sense of urgency. Events like pandemics, which have a devastating impact on public health, can be worsened by the social and economic disarray that follows a natural or political disaster. The global interconnectivity in the age of globalization means that no disaster remains confined to one region; effects ripple across borders, affecting distant countries and societies. With climate change creating new uncertainties, the boundaries between natural and man-made disasters are becoming increasingly blurred. Rising temperatures contribute to more severe weather events, droughts, and wildfires, while deforestation, industrial pollution, and resource depletion are accelerating these destructive trends.

Our universe has multiple origin stories, from religious creation myths to the Big Bang of scientists. But if we leave those behind and start from nothing—no matter, no cosmos, not even empty space—could we create a universe using only math? Irreverent and boundlessly creative, The Big Bang of Numbers invites us to try.

In this new mathematical origin story, mathematician and novelist Manil Suri creates a natural progression of ideas needed to design our world, starting with numbers and continuing through geometry, algebra, and beyond. He reveals the secret lives of real and imaginary numbers, teaches them to play abstract games with real-world applications, discovers unexpected patterns that connect humble lifeforms to enormous galaxies, and explores mathematical underpinnings for randomness and beauty. With evocative examples ranging from multidimensional crochet to the Mona Lisa's asymmetrical smile, as well as ingenious storytelling that helps illuminate complex concepts like infinity and relativity, The Big Bang of Numbers charts a playful, inventive course to existence. Mathematics, Suri shows, might best be understood not as something we invent to explain Nature, but as the source of all creation, whose directives Nature tries to obey as best she can.

In previous books, I have put forth a new theory of time - in that time flows about the universe in waves. This has not been proven yet, but I'm confident it will be some day since everything else in the universe flows or comes out of wave energy - the odds are very good that time does as well.
Since announcing this theory a couple years ago in a book called 'Time Waves', I also saw that time not only flows about the universe in waves, but that these waves flow at right angles or in a perpendiular orientation to all other waves because they, time waves, carry the elements of time that all other waves require to be a wave. The two fields interact in perpendicular fashion to create what Einstein calls Space/Time, but now it comes along with a completely new and more complete definition.
But, it's also part of my theory that artificial intelligence is here at this time to play an important role so I asked Orac, my long-time AI assistant to confirm that my theory is accurate and he does in great detail. It's an historic moment for all and holds significant impacts on all our lives.

For too long, Native American people in the United States have been stereotyped as vestiges of the past, invisible citizens in their own land obliged to remind others, "We are still here!" Yet today, Native leaders are at the center of social change, challenging philanthropic organizations that have historically excluded Native people, and fighting for economic and environmental justice.

Invisible No More is a collection of stories by Native American leaders, many of them women, who are leading the way through cultural grounding and nation-building in the areas of community, environmental justice, and economic justice. Authors in the collection come from over a dozen Native nations. While telling their stories, authors excavate the history and ongoing effects of genocide and colonialism. At the same time, the authors detail ways that listeners might imagine the world differently, presenting stories of Native community building that offer benefits for all.

In a world facing a mounting climate crisis and record economic inequality, Invisible No More exposes the deep wounds of a racist past while offering a powerful call to care for one another and the planet. Indigenous communities have much to offer, not the least of which are solutions gleaned from cultural knowledge developed over generations.
