  This work is an extended exhortation urging white ministers and slaveowners to attend to the spiritual needs of slaves and free blacks. The book is broken into four parts. The first part is an historical sketch of slavery in the Colonies and the United States, with a focus on missionary and religious efforts directed towards the African slaves. This account goes from 1620 to 1842. Jones closes this first part with a summary of each denomination and each state. The second part treats the "Moral and Religious Condition" of slaves and free blacks, blaming their circumstances for their lack of virtue. Jones especially calls attention to their poverty and lack of education. He describes their ignorance of Christianity, their general lack of character, and their prevailing vices, noting that in the end, they are totally dependent on white men for the ability to overcome these limitations. In light of this description, Jones goes on in the third part to describe the obligations of the Christian church to rectify these problems. He asserts that the religious education of the African part of the population is a duty no Christian can ignore. In addition, he lists several benefits of religious instruction. The final part of the book proposes some strategies for implementing programs of religious instruction for slaves, making recommendations for Sabbath services as well as weekday plantation meetings. Jones says that the Christian gospel must be presented in a way that is intelligible to uneducated slaves, and must be inculcated early in childhood when possible. The guiding principle he describes for dealing with the condition of the slave is to be only concerned with the spiritual, not the secular, political, or civil. Jones concludes with pointed exhortations to masters, ministers, and the church at large, calling them all to devote more attention to the religious instruction of the African part of the American population.

  The Great Famine of 1896-1897 was one of the most devastating periods of hunger and suffering in colonial India. Spanning across large regions, particularly in the Deccan Plateau, this famine marked a tragic chapter in the history of British colonial rule. It resulted in the death of hundreds of thousands of people, although the exact number remains disputed due to the limited data available from that era. 
  This famine was not an isolated event but part of a larger pattern of food scarcity issues that India faced under British colonial governance. However, the 1896-1897 famine stood out due to the scale of its impact, the widespread malnutrition it caused, and the delayed and ineffective relief efforts by the British authorities. The failure to provide adequate assistance and the harsh economic policies implemented during this period are considered by many as contributing factors to the famine’s severity. 
  The environmental conditions in India played a significant role in the famine. A series of poor monsoons coupled with crop failures resulted in a severe food shortage. However, the effects of the famine were compounded by British policies that prioritized export of food grains from India to feed the empire’s industrial needs. This practice exacerbated food scarcity in the affected regions, leaving local populations without the resources they needed to survive.

In this book we will examine Jo's relationships and how they correlate with Alcott's personal life. Louisa May Alcott had a huge crush on her father´s best friend philosopher Waldo Emerson. Louisa wrote love letters to him but she never sent them and she used to sit under his window singing "Migon´s song". Mignon´s song is a song from Goethe´s novel, Wilhelm Meister´s apprenticeship, which was one of Alcott´s favourite books. Emerson was one of the many models for Friedrich. The main model was philosopher Henry Thoreau who merited Louisa´s lifelong affection.

Niina is super knowledgeable in all things LW, from the book(s) to the movies and author Louisa May Alcott’s real life. I love that the discussions are based on the book and highlight the differences (sometimes controversial) between the original and newer adaptations. Highly recommended for anybody who loves getting lost in the world of Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy March.
