This book is about understanding how much neurodivergence and masking has unconsciously shaped so many people without them realising. For generations we have not recognised that many people who are highly adapted to a neurotypical world haven't been acknowledged or supported, especially women and girls. It explores the experience of attention divergent and highly sensitive people (often referred to as ADD or ADHD), Autistic people (often referred to as ASD) and people who are both (Dualies), in a non- pathologizing way. It challenges the current use of pathologizing language and explores the intersection of all the other shaping influences on how we make sense of this identity, including trauma, family of origin and overlaps between different types of neurodivergence. It explores the likely evolutionary components of how humans have developed different kinds of brains and attributes and makes suggestions for developing a more inclusive and validating picture of neurodiversity in schools, the workplace, families and friendship groups. Helen draws on her own and her partner's experiences of being neurodivergent, as well as drawing from stories of her friends, family and clients to develop a greater understanding of why it is important to embrace this identity if it applies to you. Helen is a psychologist who has worked with people for forty years. She describes how important it is to realise how masking neurodivergence stops people from realising their full potential, and where embracing it helps personal growth and a positive identity.

  • Feel Heal & Let That Sh*t Go - Your Guide to Emotional Resilience and Lasting Self-Love - cover

Feel Heal & Let That Sh*t Go -...

    Rachel Kaplan

A psychotherapist and hit podcaster brings empathy and humor to her first book, a radical reimagining of the self-help genre that teaches readers how to “process their emotional sh*t,” let it go, and enjoy the life they’re living

After suffering through her own cycle of tragedy, suppressed emotion, professional study, therapy, and eventual breakthrough, Rachel Kaplan knows from experience that many of us avoid actually feeling our feelings. Instead, we store them in a kind of emotional constipation, chasing distraction, addiction, consumption, and other forms of suppression. The only way to heal from traumatic experiences and difficult feelings, to live healthier and happier lives, is to move the emotions through our bodies—to let that sh*t go.

Heal, Feel, and Let That Sh*t Go is a revolutionary and irreverent approach to personal transformation and self-care that teaches readers precisely how to (and why they should) feel emotions to move them through the body as nature intended. Kaplan calls this modality “emotional potty training,” and the revolutionary community she’s nurturing, the Feelings Movement. Her approach helps readers heal themselves deep down, eliminate doubt about their own self-worth and value, and importantly, enjoy the journey.

To accomplish this, Kaplan guides readers to:
    • reconnect and reintegrate with their younger selves who suppressed emotion because they needed connection and approval from parents in order to survive
    • access the inner pain resulting from the experience of feeling unlovable and other traumas that were not emotionally processed at the time
    • engage in self-care practices and step-by-step physical and mental exercises to work through and release these pent-up feelings

Restoring the ability to process emotion is the only effective means for reducing our backlog of emotional pain, establishing a baseline of well-being and self-trust, and overcoming the debilitating effects of core wounds, chronic stress, depression, and misery. By letting that sh*t go, readers can enjoy the life they’re living and know their worth, no matter what.

We all have a natural emotional healing process, just as we do a natural physical healing process within us. When we get a wound, our bodies' natural healing process takes care of it. When emotionally painful events occur in our lives, we usually manage to overcome them and move on with our lives. On the other hand, a cut does not always heal until it has been cleaned and an antibiotic has been applied. Similarly, when something emotionally upsetting occurs, the brain's processing system isn't always able to absorb it and put it into the context of our entire lives without assistance. Sometimes we are completely unaware of what is going on.Although the image of the incident may not come to us consciously, we may feel unworthy, sad, afraid, or nauseous. We may be unaware that we are being swamped with dysfunctionally stored material from the past. We may act in ways we later regret and not wholly comprehend why. The EMDR method recognizes that you aren't reacting on purpose; the triggered memories are at the root of your actions that aren't consistent with who you are now. EMDR can assist the brain's processing system repair emotional wounds in the same way that an antibiotic ointment can help cure a cut. It's still your own internal process conducting the healing; EMDR simply "jump starts" it when it's needed and speeds it up.Once the isolated "land mine" of trauma has been reprocessed using EMDR, it is neutralized, meaning it will no longer go off and flood into the present. It's woven into the fabric of your existence, so it appears to be over and cannot derail you from your current state of bliss. The information appears to be stimulated, and the brain can reprocess the situation due to eye movements or other bilateral stimulation. Eye movements are only a tiny part of EMDR. In processing traumatic memories, current concerns, or future fears, integrates imagery, beliefs, emotions, and physical sensations.

The death of someone we hold dear may be inevitable; being paralyzed by our grief is not. Recent research has revealed our capacity for resilient grieving, our innate ability to respond to traumatic loss by finding ways to grow—by becoming more engaged with our lives, and discovering new, profound meaning.

In this completely updated and expanded second edition, author and resilience/well-being expert Lucy Hone, a pioneer in positive psychology and bereavement research, continues to push her field forward. In 2014, Lucy was faced with her own inescapable sorrow after her twelve-year-old daughter was killed in a car accident. By following the strategies of resilient grieving, she found a proactive way to move through her grief, and, over time, embrace life again. Since then, Lucy has become a leading voice in resilience and bereavement science, overturning widely held myths and misconceptions, making plain the harms of rigid models such as Kübler-Ross's five stages, and advocating for a more adaptive grieving process that emphasizes emotions, relationships, attention, forgiveness, and self-compassion.
