It was first published in the Christmas 1885 issue of The Court and Society Review, then re-published in 1887 as part of the collection The Merry Men and Other Tales and Fables. It is set in Spain during the Peninsular War.

The story is based on a dream that Stevenson had and in his 1888 essay "A Chapter on Dreams" he describes the difficulties he had in fitting his vision into a narrative framework. Six has always been a number we group things around – Six of the best, six of one half a dozen of another, six feet under, six pack, six degrees of separation and a sixth sense are but a few of the ways we use this number.

Such is its popularity that we thought it is also a very good way of challenging and investigating an author’s work to give width, brevity, humour and depth across six of their very best.

In this series we gather together authors whose short stories both rivet the attention and inspire the imagination to visit their gems in a series of six, to roam across an author’s legacy in a few short hours and gain a greater understanding of their writing and, of course, to be lavishly entertained by their ideas, their narrative and their way with words.

These stories can be surprising and sometimes at a tangent to what we expected, but each is fully formed and a marvellous adventure into the world and words of a literary master.

Ernest Hemingway was born in Oak Park, Illinois, on July 21, 1899. He served in World War I as an ambulance driver on the Italian front; he was wounded and decorated. After the war, he worked as a journalist before settling in Paris, where he met Gertrude Stein and Ezra Pound, who shaped his literary voice. His prose was terse, his sentences short, and his stories of men and their battles with nature, with love, with their own souls. Hemingway wrote many novels and short stories: "The Sun Also Rises," "A Farewell to Arms," "For Whom the Bell Tolls," and "The Old Man and the Sea," for which he received the Pulitzer Prize. He lived in Key West, Cuba, and Idaho, always in pursuit of the perfect sentence, the true experience.
He married four times, loved deeply, and fought hard against his inner demons. Hemingway's life was marked by adventure, war, hunting, fishing, and an unyielding quest for authenticity. In 1954, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. On July 2, 1961, in Ketchum, Idaho, he ended his life with a shotgun. His works endure, capturing the essence of a man facing the world, striving for grace under pressure.
Frank Marcopolos lives in Florida with his dog, Sparky.
