Sinopse

Discover the Wisdom That Shaped the World.

For over 2,500 years, the fables of Aesop have served as the ultimate guide to human nature, ethics, and common sense. This definitive collection brings together every one of these legendary tales—from the race between the Tortoise and the Hare to the hard-learned lesson of the Boy Who Cried Wolf.

Written in a style that is both simple enough for a child and profound enough for a philosopher, these stories use the animal kingdom to mirror the virtues and vices of humanity. Whether it is the Lion and the Mouse teaching us that no act of kindness is ever wasted, or the Fox and the Grapes warning us against "sour grapes," Aesop's insights remain as relevant today as they were in Ancient Greece.

This Complete Fables edition is a must-have for families, educators, and collectors of classic literature. Each story concludes with its famous "moral," making this book an invaluable tool for character building and a delightful journey into the roots of storytelling.

Own the foundation of moral philosophy. Buy "Aesop: The Complete Fables" today and share these timeless lessons with the next generation.

"A Dill Pickle" is a 1917 short story by Katherine Mansfield. It was first published in the New Age on 4 October 1917. A revised version later appeared in Bliss and Other Stories. The characters and their relationship possibly were inspired by Mansfield's older sister Vera Margaret Beauchamp and her husband James Mackintosh Bell.
A man and a woman who used to be romantically involved meet by chance in a tea-house not having seen each other for about six years. We learn that the woman ended their earlier relationship in a letter she wrote to him, but we come to doubt that she expected the letter to do so. They sit together and reminisce about past events – for example, the day they spent at Kew Gardens together. Both initially seem to regret not being friends any longer.

Before Sherlock Holmes could solve the murder in London, a tragic tale of survival, love, and ruthless betrayal unfolded in the deadly deserts of the American West.
In the arid wilderness of the Great Alkali Plain, John Ferrier and his adopted daughter Lucy face certain death until they are rescued by a massive caravan of Mormon pioneers. Brought to the newly founded Salt Lake City, they build a prosperous life—until the shadowy, iron-fisted dictates of a secret society demand Lucy's hand in a forced marriage. When the fierce, free-spirited hunter Jefferson Hope attempts to rescue the woman he loves, he triggers a brutal cat-and-mouse chase across the rocky ravines of Utah.
What begins as a desperate fight for freedom transforms into an obsessive, decades-long quest for retribution. Tracking his enemies across continents, a broken man will stop at nothing to enact his own devastating justice, leading straight into the hands of a consulting detective named Sherlock Holmes.
Why you will love this: Blending a sweeping Historical Mystery / Western aesthetic with the birth of detective fiction, this narrative shines a light on tropes of relentless revenge, pioneer survival, and hidden cults. It masterfully bridges the gap between a gritty western frontier thriller and an atmospheric Victorian police procedural.
About the Author: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859–1930) was a Scottish physician and writer who forever changed the literary landscape by creating Sherlock Holmes. His brilliant fusion of rigorous logical deduction and pulse-pounding adventure established the foundation for the modern detective genre.

Montague Rhodes James is cited as perhaps the greatest English writer of ghost stories, an opinion few would disagree with.
James was born on 1st August 1862 at Goodnestone Parsonage in Kent, where his father was Curate but at age 3 the family went to live at Livermere, near Bury St Edmunds in East Anglia.
From early childhood he had a passion for mediaeval books and antiques. He was educated initially as a boarder at Temple Grove School in East Sheen, west London, before gaining a scholarship to Eton and thence Cambridge where he gained a double first, becoming a distinguished linguist and mediaevalist.
Before the Great War vacations were usually spent touring Europe absorbing cultures and references for his later writing.
A man of enormous knowledge it was said he timed his breakfast egg whilst he completed the Times crossword.
Many of his elegant yet terrifying tales were created by discarding the prevailing gothic cliches and placing his characters and narrative in a realistic setting. Thereby the stories gained atmosphere and menace on a grand scale and he was famed as the originator of the antiquarian ghost story.
Although story-telling and writing these 30 or so tales was a hobby, when published their effect transformed the genre and still chill the bones in our more modern times.
James was also a medievalist scholar and translator whose work remains highly respected. He was also Provost of Eton College between 1918 and 1936.
M R James died on 12th June 1936 at Eton in Buckinghamshire. He was 73.
