Synopsis

In "Dem Days Was Hell - Recorded Testimonies of Former Slaves from 17 U.S. States," the Work Projects Administration presents a poignant anthology of firsthand accounts that illuminate the harrowing realities faced by former slaves in the United States. This seminal work is characterized by its raw authenticity and compelling narrative style, blending oral histories with social commentary. The testimonies, collected during the tumultuous era of the Great Depression, offer insights into the lived experiences of African Americans and serve not only as a historical documentation but also as a platform for the voices that have long been silenced. The WPA's efforts reflect a broader literary trend toward the preservation of folk narratives, allowing readers to engage with a past that deeply informs the present sociopolitical landscape. The Work Projects Administration, a New Deal agency established to alleviate unemployment during the 1930s, embarked on ambitious projects capturing the oral histories of marginalized communities. By assembling these narratives, the WPA aimed to document the harsh realities of American life while employing those in the arts and humanities. The initiative reflects the organization's commitment to social justice and the preservation of cultural heritage, which undoubtedly influenced the curation of this impactful compilation. "Dem Days Was Hell" is highly recommended for scholars, students, and general readers eager to explore the intricate tapestry of American history through the eyes of its most affected individuals. This book not only serves as an indispensable historical record but also as a reminder of the resilience of the human spirit in the face of systemic oppression. Engaging with these narratives will enrich one'Äôs understanding of the complexities of race, identity, and memory in America.

This sweeping history reorients our understanding of the Middle East, placing the Gulf at the heart of globalized trade and cross-cultural encounters.

World history began in the Persian Gulf. The ancient port cities that dotted its coastlines created the first global seaboard, a place from where faiths and cultures from around the world set sail and made contact. More than a history, The Center of the World shows us that contradictions that define our modern age have always been present.

For over four thousand years, the Gulf—sometimes called the Persian Gulf, sometimes the Arabian Gulf—has been a global crossroads while managing to avoid control by the world's greatest empires. In its history, we see a world of rapid change, fluctuating centers of trade, a dependency on uncertain global markets, and intense cross-cultural encounters that hold a mirror to the contemporary world. Focusing each chapter on a different port around the Gulf, The Center of the World shows how the people of the Gulf adapted to larger changes in world history, creating a system of free trade, merchant rule, and commerce that continues to define the region today.

Weaving personal narrative with political analysis, Community as Rebellion offers a meditation on creating liberatory spaces for students and faculty of color within academia. Much like other women scholars of color, Lorgia García Peña has struggled against the colonizing, racializing, classist, and unequal structures that perpetuate systemic violence within universities. Through personal experiences and analytical reflections, the author invites listeners—in particular Black, Indigenous, Latinx, and Asian women—to engage in liberatory practices of boycott, abolition, and radical community-building to combat the academic world's tokenizing and exploitative structures.

García Peña argues that the classroom is key to freedom-making in the university, urging teachers to consider activism and social justice as central to what she calls "teaching in freedom": a progressive form of collective learning that prioritizes the subjugated knowledge, silenced histories, and epistemologies from the Global South and Indigenous, Black, and brown communities. By teaching in and for freedom, we not only acknowledge the harm that the university has inflicted on our persons and our ways of knowing since its inception, but also create alternative ways to be, create, live, and succeed through our work.

    Egyptian Revival - The Influence...

The fascination with Ancient Egypt has influenced architectural and artistic movements for centuries, culminating in what is known as the Egyptian Revival. This movement, characterized by its adaptation of ancient Egyptian motifs, emerged in response to rediscoveries of Egypt’s past. The revival gained traction during the 18th and 19th centuries, driven by archaeological discoveries, historical curiosity, and a growing appreciation for non-European artistic traditions.
One of the key moments that ignited interest in Ancient Egypt was Napoleon Bonaparte’s Egyptian campaign (1798–1801). This military expedition was not just an act of conquest but also a scientific endeavor that brought scholars, artists, and historians to document Egypt’s ancient ruins. The most significant outcome of this campaign was the publication of the “Description de l'Égypte,” a comprehensive collection of illustrations and studies that introduced Europe to the architectural grandeur of Egypt. The discovery of the Rosetta Stone in 1799 further fueled this fascination, as it eventually led to the deciphering of Egyptian hieroglyphics, allowing deeper insights into the civilization’s history and culture.
The widespread enthusiasm for Ancient Egypt in the early 19th century gave rise to what historians call “Egyptomania.” This cultural phenomenon influenced literature, fashion, decorative arts, and architecture. Egyptian imagery, including sphinxes, obelisks, and pyramidal forms, began to appear in European cityscapes. The influence was particularly noticeable in monumental architecture, where designers sought to capture the imposing and symbolic nature of ancient Egyptian structures. The fascination with Egypt was further fueled by colonial expansion, as European powers took a vested interest in the region’s antiquities.

    Elixir - A Parisian Perfume...

For centuries, scientists believed that living matter possessed a special quality—a spirit or essence—that differentiated it from nonliving matter. But by the nineteenth century, the scientific consensus was that the building blocks of one were identical to the building blocks of the other. Elixir tells the story of two young chemists who were not convinced, and how their work rewrote the boundary between life and nonlife.

In the 1830s, Édouard Laugier and Auguste Laurent were working in Laugier Père et Fils, the oldest perfume house in Paris. By day they prepared the perfumery's revitalizing elixirs and rejuvenating eaux, drawing on alchemical traditions that equated a plant's vitality with its aroma. In their spare time they hunted the vital force that promised to reveal the secret to life itself. Their ideas, roundly condemned by established chemists, led to the discovery of structural differences between naturally occurring molecules and their synthetic counterparts, even when the molecules were chemically identical.

Scientists still can't explain this anomaly, but it may point to critical insights concerning the origins of life on Earth. Rich in sparks and smells, brimming with eccentric characters, experimental daring, and the romance of the Bohemian salon, Elixir is a fascinating cultural and scientific history.
