Sinossi

In "The History of Slavery," Adam Gurowski meticulously explores the multifaceted dimensions of slavery, stretching across historical epochs and cultural landscapes. Written with an analytical rigor characteristic of 19th-century scholarship, the text intertwines first-hand accounts, sociopolitical analysis, and legal contexts, presenting a profound examination of the institution of slavery from antiquity to modernity. Gurowski's use of narrative techniques and a wealth of historical data enriches the reader's understanding, situating slavery not only as a system of exploitation but as a complex social phenomenon influencing economic and political power dynamics. Adam Gurowski, a Polish émigré and prominent political thinker, was deeply influenced by his experiences in Europe and his encounters with American society. His commitment to social justice and political reform is evident in his work, as he seeks to illuminate the darker chapters of history to promote a more equitable future. Gurowski's unique perspectives as a historian and an abolitionist fuel his passion in advocating for human rights and dignity, making his reflections on slavery particularly poignant. This essential text is a must-read for scholars, students, and general readers alike, providing invaluable insights into the enduring legacies of slavery. When Samuel Townsend died at his home in Madison County, Alabama, in November 1856, the fifty-two-year-old white planter left behind hundreds of slaves, thousands of acres of rich cotton land, and a net worth of approximately $200,000. In life, Samuel had done little to distinguish himself from other members of the South's elite slaveholding class. But he made a name for himself in death by leaving almost the entirety of his fortune to his five sons, four daughters, and two nieces: all of them his slaves.

In this deeply researched, movingly narrated portrait of the extended Townsend family, R. Isabela Morales reconstructs the migration of this mixed-race family across the American West and South over the second half of the nineteenth century. Searching for communities where they could exercise their newfound freedom and wealth to the fullest, members of the family homesteaded and attended college in Ohio and Kansas; fought for the Union Army in Mississippi; mined for silver in the Colorado Rockies; and, in the case of one son, returned to Alabama to purchase part of the old plantation where he had once been held as a slave. In Morales's telling, the Townsends' story maps a new landscape of opportunity and oppression, where the meanings of race and freedom—as well as opportunities for social and economic mobility—were dictated by highly local circumstances.

    Water Borne - A 1200-Mile...

In June 2023, writer Dan Rubinstein lashed camping gear to his stand-up paddleboard and embarked on an improbable solo voyage from Ottawa to Montreal, New York City, Toronto, and back to Ottawa along the rivers, lakes, and canals of a landlocked region. Over 1,200 miles and 10 weeks, he explored the healing potential of “blue space” — the aquatic equivalent of green space — and sought out others drawn to their local waters.

But the farther Rubinstein paddled, the more he realized that being in, on, or around water does more than boost our mental and physical health and prompt stewardship toward the natural world. He discovered that blue spaces are also a way to connect with the kaleidoscopic cross-section of people he met and the diverse geographies and communities he passed through.

Weaving together research, interviews, and an unmacho, malodorous, anticolonial adventure tale, Water Borne shows us that we don’t need an epic journey to find solutions to so many modern challenges. Repair and renewal may be close at hand: just add water.

    Moral Letters to Lucilius

"Philosophy is not a trick for the public, it is for the soul."

Seneca was a statesman, dramatist, and one of Rome's wealthiest men—yet he spent his final days writing these letters to his friend Lucilius on how to find true freedom. Moral Letters to Lucilius is a deep dive into the practical application of Stoicism. Seneca tackles the universal anxieties we still face today: the fear of death, the burden of grief, the noise of the crowd, and the pursuit of luxury. He argues that the only true wealth is a mind that is at peace with itself and the natural order of the world.

The "Doctor of the Soul": Seneca's writing style is warm, conversational, and filled with memorable aphorisms. He treats philosophy as a "remedy" for the sickness of the mind. Whether he is advising on how to choose a true friend or how to handle a difficult boss, his advice is designed to be used the moment you put the book down.

The Resilience of the Mind: Through these letters, Seneca prepares Lucilius (and the reader) for the "slings and arrows of outrageous fortune." He emphasizes the practice of Premeditatio Malorum—rehearsing potential difficulties so that they never take us by surprise—and the importance of living every day as if it were our last.

Why It Is a Modern Essential: From Silicon Valley CEOs to modern therapists, Seneca's letters remain a go-to resource for mental clarity. He teaches us that we "suffer more often in imagination than in reality" and provides the tools to build an unshakable inner character in an unpredictable world.

Begin your journey toward a calmer life. Purchase "Moral Letters to Lucilius" today.
