Beschreibung

The Jack Russell Terrier is a small to medium sized dog breed characterized by its excellent hunting abilities and adaptable personality. The breed originated in England in the 19th century, where it was bred by a man named Reverend John (Jack) Russell. Reverend Russell was a keen hunter and kept a variety of dogs to help him hunt. However, he was dissatisfied with the existing dog breeds and began to breed his own dogs. His aim was to create a dog that was fast, agile and intelligent and that could track and catch its prey. The dogs Reverend Russell used for his breeding were a mixture of different terrier breeds, including the Fox Terrier, the Black-and-Tan Terrier and the English White Terrier. These breeds were chosen because they were all excellent hunting dogs and had strong personalities. The dogs that Reverend Russell bred became known as Parson Russell Terriers, named after their breeder.

Here's a strip to savor, doubly immersed in squeaky cleanliness and a knowing grasp of second graders' cool universe."Frazz is fun. Frazz is cool. Frazz is . . . a hit! Take one successful and secure songwriter, put him on the steering end of a janitor's broom, and drop him into the world of elementary education. And with that, if Jef Mallett's calling the creative shots, you have the makings of one of the most flourishing new comic strips to come along in years.Frazz follows the life and loves of one Edwin Frazier, aka "Frazz," as he writes more best-selling lyrics, ponders the world's greatest literature and deepest mysteries with an 8-year-old genius, and interacts with the menagerie of other faculty and staff members. What results is a wild mix of witty observations and outright slapstick that amuses while causing you to see the world in a new light.99 Percent Perspiration is the second collection of this very popular strip that appears in more than 150 newspapers worldwide, including the Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, and Chicago Tribune. A study of the US National Park Service’s efforts to allow for as many visitors as possible in the parks that are kept in as natural a state as possible.“Yosemite Valley in July of 1967 would have had to be seen to be believed. There was never an empty campsite in the valley; you had to create a space for yourself in a sea of cars, tents, and humanity. . . . The camp next to ours had fifty people in it, with rugs hung between the trees, incense burning, and a stereo set going full volume.”Scenes such as this will probably never be repeated in Yosemite or any other national park, yet the urgent problem remains of balancing the public's desire to visit the parks with the parks’ need to be protected from too many people and cars and too much development. In this book, longtime park visitor and professional geographer Bob O’Brien explores the National Park Service’s attempt to achieve “sustainability,” a balance that allows as many people as possible to visit a park that is kept in as natural a state as possible.O’Brien details methods the NPS has used to walk the line between those who would preserve vast tracts of land for “no use” and those who would tap the Yellowstone geysers to generate electricity. His case studies of six western “crown jewel” parks show how rangers and other NPS employees are coping with issues that impact these cherished public landscapes, including visitation, development, and recreational use.

In January 2002, Rory Stewart walked across Afghanistan--surviving by his wits, his knowledge of Persian dialects and Muslim customs, and the kindness of strangers. By day he passed through mountains covered in nine feet of snow, hamlets burned and emptied by the Taliban, and communities thriving amid the remains of medieval civilizations. By night he slept on villagers" floors, shared their meals, and listened to their stories of the recent and ancient past.
Along the way Stewart met heroes and rogues, tribal elders and teenage soldiers, Taliban commanders and foreign-aid workers. He was also adopted by an unexpected companion--a retired fighting mastiff he named Babur in honor of Afghanistan's first Mughal emperor, in whose footsteps the pair was following. Through these encounters--by turns touching, confounding, surprising, and funny--Stewart makes tangible the forces of tradition, ideology, and allegiance that shape life in the map's countless places in between.
