Beschreibung

A punchy and provocative story about democracy, power, and how we can try to build a better world.
A generation of young people has been let down. Schools are crumbling, the NHS is falling apart, and soon there won't be a planet left to save. It feels like the people in charge simply don't care.
Pushed to the edge, a group of teenagers decide to create a future for themselves, carving out a utopia away from the failings of those who came before. But if you rebuild a society from the ground up, how do you avoid making the same mistakes?
Abi Falase and Tatenda Shamiso's play The Village was first staged at the Almeida Theatre, London, performed by the Almeida Young Company.
The Nick Hern Books Multiplay Drama series features large-cast plays specifically written to be performed by and appeal to young adults. For more information, visit www.multiplaydrama.co.uk.

Arriving from his East Midlands beginnings into a London thick with the grime of industrialisation, Joseph Merrick is an anomaly. In a city of factories that churn out uniformity, there is no place for someone like him.
But Merrick and the city are evolving into something new. We follow him through the workhouse, the freak show and the hospital, as he searches for acceptance in a society that just wants to stare at him.
Powerful, angry and surprising, Tom Wright's acclaimed play imagines an alternative history of the person who came to be known as 'the Elephant Man'. It restores Joseph Merrick to the centre of his own story: a man fighting for his right to be and to belong.
The Real & Imagined History of the Elephant Man was first performed at Melbourne's Malthouse Theatre, before receiving its European premiere at Nottingham Playhouse in 2023, directed by Stephen Bailey, and supported by a grant from The Royal Theatrical Support Trust.

Before the Stage, There Was the Page: Discover Shakespeare the Poet.

While the world knows William Shakespeare for his legendary plays, it was his sweeping narrative poems that first established him as a literary titan in the eyes of the Elizabethan elite. This collection brings together his longer, epic-style works—masterpieces of desire, betrayal, and political ruin that showcase a level of linguistic ornament and psychological intensity rarely seen on the stage.

This collection explores the pillars of Shakespeare's poetic genius:

The Master of Classical Adaptation: Witness the Bard reimagining the myths of ancient Rome and Greece, breathing fresh, visceral life into tales of tragic desire and legendary honor.

The Psychology of the Verse: Experience the internal monologues of characters caught in moments of extreme crisis, rendered with the same complexity found in his greatest dramatic soliloquies.

Formal Perfection: Explore his command of demanding poetic structures, from the flowing "Sesta Rima" to the stately "Rhyme Royal," demonstrating a technical virtuosity that defined the English Renaissance.

Themes of Power and Virtue: Delve into narratives that examine the corruption of authority and the resilience of the human spirit, serving as a poetic mirror to the political tensions of his time.

Shakespeare's epic poems offer a richer, more descriptive immersion into his world than his scripts alone. They are essential for anyone seeking the full breadth of his literary legacy and linguistic beauty.

Greekling, the much-anticipated debut poetry collection by Kostya Tsolakis, celebrates and commemorates damaged and rejected Greek bodies, be they of flesh and blood, made of marble, or natural bodies. In intertwining Greek culture, history and poetic influences with the contemporary queer experience, this collection is perceptive, lyrical, and deeply evocative of time and place. From an Athenian childhood to a closeted adolescence in the shadow of the AIDS epidemic, towards sexual self-discovery, maturity and freedom – Tsolakis charts the pursuit of unconditional happiness.
These poems explore queer joy on dance floors, darkrooms and bedsits, but also the risks of crossing strangers' thresholds or in encountering the violent machismo and hypermasculine expectations of the society you grow up in. And ever-present through the collection is Athens – the city the poet once turned his back on at eighteen but has come to love again. Moving between lament and celebration, Greekling reflects on a changing and often misrepresented country, the nature of motherlands and mother tongues; it is a voyage out – and a return.

In his numerous roles as groundbreaking poet, editor, translator, storyteller, and father of what he has called "the expressive men's movement," Bly remains one of the most hotly debated American artists of the past half century. In this new collection of poems, the National Book Award-winning poet explores the meaning of mature love in a sustained meditation on faithfulness, on the sustenance of intimacy, and on grief as the door to deep emotion.

Welcome y'all! This project was created for those who think they don't like Shakespeare. It is a completely unsanctioned and unconventional interpretation of some of the works of William Shakespeare. If you are a purist be forewarned! I have always been fascinated with the written works of Shakespeare since I was a child trying to decipher the giant volume of his works I discovered in my father's library. I knew it was important historically but the language had me often running to a dictionary in those pre-Google days. Understanding a live performance was an equally challenging task as the British accents combined with the lambic pentameter rhythm left me struggling to understand the meaning. But once you figure what he's saying you realized these timeless stories of dysfunctional families and political intrigue are just as relevant today as 400 years ago. Every actor in training experiences the works of William Shakespeare to some degree. While memorizing lines I would try various characters and accents. For Richard III's famous opening monologue I settled on a genteel aristocrat from the Southern United States. I shared with my instructor and after some initial eye rolls he had to admit it was easier to understand. Eventually I created a one man show around the idea and wrote original songs that I believe express the emotion and underlying intentions of the pieces. And of course what's a variety show without an MC or two. In this case two squabbling siblings Auntie Bella and her twin brother Beauregard to bring a small respite to the drama. During the COVID pandemic I decided to record an audio version of the show. I hope you enjoy my family of misfits as much as I did creating them. But hey, to thine own taste be true. Cousin Willy must have had a sense of humor to write some of this stuff!
