Synopsis

In "Lessons of the War with Spain and Other Articles," A. T. Mahan meticulously examines the 1898 Spanish-American War, offering not only a strategic analysis of naval power but also a broader commentary on the implications for American imperialism. Mahan's prose reflects a keen understanding of maritime strategy infused with historical context, drawing parallels between naval supremacy and national influence. The collection extends beyond the war itself, incorporating critical essays that articulate Mahan's belief in the necessity of a strong navy, thereby situated in the late 19th century's evolving geopolitical landscape marked by burgeoning American confidence and expansionism. A. T. Mahan, a prominent naval officer and historian, was deeply influenced by the changing dynamics of international power during his lifetime. His foundational works, especially "The Influence of Sea Power upon History, 1660-1783," laid the groundwork for modern naval strategy. The insights garnered from his extensive military career and scholarly pursuits informed his exploration of the American experience in the Spanish-American War, prompting a reflection on the lessons learned regarding sea power and national policy. This book is essential reading for historians, military strategists, and anyone interested in the trajectory of U.S. foreign policy. Mahan's eloquent arguments emphasize the importance of maintaining naval strength in pursuit of national interests, making it a thought-provoking piece that remains relevant in contemporary discussions of maritime strategy and imperialism.

The Anti-Federalists, in Herbert J. Storing’s view, are somewhat paradoxically entitled to be counted among the Founding Fathers and to share in the honor and study devoted to the founding. “If the foundations of the American polity was laid by the Federalists,” he writes, “the Anti-Federalist reservations echo through American history; and it is in the dialogue, not merely in the Federalist victory, that the country’s principles are to be discovered.” It was largely through their efforts, he reminds us, that the Constitution was so quickly amended to include a bill of rights.Storing here offers a brilliant introduction to the thought and principles of the Anti-Federalists as they were understood by themselves and by other men and women of their time. His comprehensive exposition restores to our understanding the Anti-Federalist share in the founding its effect on some of the enduring themes and tensions of American political life. The concern with big government and infringement of personal liberty one finds in the writings of these neglected Founders strikes a remarkably timely note.

This critical history of Doctor Who covers the series 60 years, from the creation of the show to its triumph as Britain's number one TV drama.

Opening with an in-depth account of the creation of the series within the BBC of the early 1960s, each decade of the show is tackled through a unique political and pop cultural historical viewpoint, exploring the links between contemporary Britain and the stories Doctor Who told, and how such links kept the show popular with a mass television audience.

Timeless Adventures reveals how Doctor Who is at its strongest when it reflects the political and cultural concerns of a mass British audience (the 1960s, 1970s and 21st Century), and at its weakest when catering to a narrow fan-based audience (as in the 1980s). The book also addresses the cancellation of the show in the late 1980s (following the series becoming increasing self-obsessed) and the ways in which a narrowly-focused dedicated fandom contributed to the show's demise and yet was also instrumental in its regeneration for the 21st Century under Russell T. Davies, and analyses the new series to reveal what has made it so popular, reflecting real world issues like consumerism and dieting.

To the ancient Egyptians, the gods and goddesses were all around them and could be seen daily in nature. Nearly every animal found in ancient Egypt, both domestic and wild, were associated with a god or goddess, which can be seen in Egyptian art where deities are often depicted with human bodies and animal heads. Or sometimes the deities are portrayed as complete animals. Since deities were associated with certain animals, all animals of a specific species were given divine and protected status.
Animals were constantly involved in the core elements of Greek society and cults, and this centrality could be found in the numerous depictions of animals on coins and vases throughout the Greek colonies. Game and fish were plentiful, along with deer, wolves, boar, lynx, and even bears. Similarly, there were numerous jackals and porcupines. There were, however, a few significant species that would have been found in the wild in Classical times, such as the agrimis (or Cretan goat) and the lion, that have either become totally extinct or virtually extinct in the modern-day region. Lions, in particular, often feature in Greek literature, and both Herodotus and Aristotle described lions in northern Greece. The presence of lions in Greece seems further confirmed by their numerous portrayals in Mycenaean art and tales of lions in Homer.
Rome's complex relationship with animals goes right back to its foundation myth, and even today, the wolf remains a symbol of the Eternal City, forming part of the logo for the capital's football team, A.S. Roma. According to tradition, the city of Rome was founded by Romulus, who, with his brother Remus, was nursed and sheltered by a she-wolf. That tale, widely believed as a historical fact by ancient Romans, had a profound influence on Roman culture, and in part that shaped Roman attitudes toward their animals.
