Sinopse

Scotland’s greatest export. The world’s first super spy. Voted the sexiest man on the planet. Sir Sean Connery was a titanic figure on screen and off for over half a century. Behind the son of a factory worker, growing up in near-poverty on the harsh streets of pre-war Edinburgh, lay a timeless array of motion pictures that spanned multiple decades and saw Connery work across the globe with directors as diverse as Alfred Hitchcock, Steven Spielberg and Michael Bay. And amongst them his greatest role, whether he liked it or not – Bond, James Bond. Author A. J. Black delves into Connery’s life for more than mere biography, exploring not just the enormously varied pictures he made including crowd pleasing blockbusters such as The Untouchables or Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, serious-minded fare in The Hill or The Offence, and his strange sojourns into eclectic fantasy with Zardoz or Time Bandits, but also the sweep of a career that crossed movie eras as well as decades. From skirmishes with the angry young men of the British New Wave, via becoming the cinematic icon of the 1960s as 007, through to a challenging reinvention as a unique older actor of stature in the 1980s, this exploration of the Cinematic Connery shows just how much his work reflected the changing movie-going tastes, political realities and cultural trends of the 20th century, and beyond . . .

The Last Sea Dog tells the story of Jean-Luc Van Den Heede's life and his many sailing adventures, focussing on his triumph in the 2018/19 Golden Globe Race. Jean-Luc has rounded Cape Horn 12 times and completed six solo circumnavigations. These have resulted in five race podiums and one world record, which he still currently holds. He has been on the podium twice in the Vendée Globe single-handed race around the world, coming third in 1990 and second in 1993. More recently he won the Golden Globe Race in 2018/19 at the age of 73. This race was run as a fiftieth anniversary of the 1968 race of the same name won by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston. While the restriction of no assistance and no stopovers were not particularly unusual, more challenging were the requirements to sail the race 'as in 1968' with yachts similar to those available in that year and, except for safety equipment, no modern technology allowed. No satellite-based navigation aids were available to the sailors and they had to use a sextant to navigate around the world as Robin had done fifty years previously. Jean-Luc was born in Amiens, far from the sea, and he became a maths teacher. Nevertheless, he developed a passion for competitive sailing. He is friendly and easy to approach, but he is also a formidable competitor with an abundance of courage and perseverance. This personal account of his life and the Golden Globe Race is an amazing story of a man who has faced the toughest times and sea and won through

Short Poems of John MiltonWith a preface by Samuel ThurberNarrated by Denis DalyWhile the issues of the day that consumed the attention of scholar, accomplished linguist, politician and severe Puritan, John Milton (1608 - 1674) are now largely of historical interest, the verse which they inspired remains a staple of English literature. Although he is best known today for his poetic epics, Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained, Milton was also a master of shorter verse forms, particularly the sonnet, in which many consider him second only to Shakespeare. This collection includes twenty-one of Milton's best-known short works. Jesus in My Corner, written by Andy Flute, chronicles his struggle to overcome a myriad of life-long challenges with violence and alcohol. For over 30 years, violence and alcohol were Andy's daily bread until, one day, by the power of prayer, he managed to achieve what no amount of alcohol or prison incarceration could ever achieve. When he was at the point of death, intoxicated with alcohol following a ten-day binging session, I went to see my old mate and prayed for him with Pastor Steve. Andy was fighting the demon of alcohol and he was on the ropes, down for the count. Andy, a former captain of the English boxing team and British Middleweight title challenger alongside sparring partner Chris Eubank and other world class fighters, knew what brutal fighting was all about. This fight was different, one he couldn't win on his own strength. Andy felt the intense grip and destructive downward spiral alcohol had on his life. Battered and bleeding, with no more strength, he cried out to Jesus. In a truly miraculous turnaround, Andy found Jesus in his corner and almost instantaneously gave up alcohol. During the bleakest of moments, he experienced a spiritual awakening. Slowly, he found his way through darkest era of his life. He came to believe a power greater than himself in Jesus. Now with Jesus in his corner, Andy is an active member of Sedgley Community Church. The Bible employs the analogy of wrestling in reference to our warfare with Satan and his hosts. Andy had a fight that only Jesus could referee, this gigantic battle played out until he was baptised in water. Andy Flute's willingness to share the most intimate aspects of his life was born out of a deep desire to help others addicted to alcohol and violence. Despite these daunting events, Andy now works hard to live a normal life and raise a family of his own. He regularly attends prison workshops and shares his testimony in local schools.

From Dr. Kwane Stewart, CNN's Hero of the Year for 2023.
Mountains Beyond Mountains meets Tattoos On the Heart in this unforgettable, powerful, and stunningly-told memoir of a struggling veterinarian saving animals and humans on the streets of California - and how he discovered what bonds all living creatures.
Dr. Kwane Stewart was questioning his career as a veterinarian when he saw a homeless man with a flea-infested dog outside of a convenience store. In a moment of spontaneous generosity, he offered to examine the dog and treat him for free. It was the first step in a now nine-year journey that has taken Dr. Kwane from Skid Row to San Francisco and beyond to care for pets and their humans who are living on the streets.
In What It Takes to Save a Life, Dr. Kwane shows how our four-legged, feathered, scaled, and swimming family members—these dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, and other animals that live side by side with us—provide more than companionship. They offer essential love, hope, and a sense of security.
Written with striking honesty and rich detail, Dr. Kwane looks back on his childhood, how he discovered his appreciation for animals and his calling, and offers a frank assessment of the state of veterinary medicine today, where compassion fatigue, burnout, and suicide are facts of life. Full of warm and inspiring stories of human-animal relationships, this powerful and eye-opening book is a reminder that we are all members of a wider family. It is also a clarion call for each of us to help those in need—especially our most vulnerable brothers and sisters—and the animals who are their families. Wise and warm, Dr. Stewart's story is a reminder that one life can make an immeasurable difference.

Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave is a powerful and harrowing autobiography that chronicles the early life of Frederick Douglass, who was born into slavery and rose to become one of the most influential voices in the fight for abolition. First published in 1845, the book offers a firsthand account of the brutality and inhumanity of slavery, detailing Douglass’s experiences on plantations, his struggle to learn to read and write, and his courageous escape to freedom. With eloquence and moral clarity, Douglass exposes the hypocrisy of a nation that proclaimed liberty while upholding slavery, making this memoir not only a personal testament but also a foundational work in American literature and civil rights history.
