Synopsis

This vintage book contains an account of the author's trip to America in 1935. A. G. Macdonell, (1895-1941) was a novelist and journalist. His most famous works include: "The Autobiography of a Cad", arguably amongst the funniest books ever written; "Lords and Masters", a blunt and prescient satire, and "Napoleon and His Marshals" (1934), which is considered to be amongst the best accounts of the Napoleonic Wars ever written. This entertaining and insightful travelogue is highly recommended for fans of Macdonell's work and lovers of great travel writing. Carol's Lives: Two Soul's Journey in Two Cities and Beyond is a memoir with three storylines but with the same two souls - in the 1920s of New York City, in the new century of Vancouver, how they have met, how they meet again, and how hypnotic trances were used for their exploration. These storylines stand alone, yet they cross time and space, weaving into each other in ways that transcend the individual sorties, and lead to yet another new dimension. Kemila tells the story from inside out and outside in, adding her personal courage and professional expertise into the intricacy of the complex, yet simple stores of where two souls meet, the first time, once again.

    Heretic - A Memoir

A memoir of leaving the evangelical church and the search for radical new ways to build community.
Jeanna Kadlec knew what it meant to be faithful--in her marriage to a pastor’s son, in the comfortable life ahead of her, in her God--but there was no denying the truth that lived under that conviction: she was queer and, if she wanted to survive, she would need to leave behind the church and every foundational building block she knew.
Heretic is a memoir of rebirth. Within, Kadlec reckons with religious trauma and Midwestern values, as a means of unveiling how evangelicalism directly impacts every American--religious or not--and has been a major force in driving our democracy towards fascism. From the story of Lilith to celebrity purity rings, Kadlec interrogates how her indoctrination and years of piety intersects with her Midwest working-class upbringing. As she navigated graduate school, a new home on the East Coast, and a new marriage, another insidious truth began to reveal itself --that conservative Christianity has both built and undermined our political power structures, poisoned our pop culture, and infected how we interact with one another in ways that the secular population couldn’t see.
Weaving the personal with powerful critique, Heretic explores how we can radically abandon these painful systems by taking a sledgehammer to the comfortable. Whether searching for community in the face of millennial loneliness or wanting to reclaim a secular form of fellowship in everyday life, Kadlec envisions the brilliant possibilities that come with not only daring to want a different way but actually striking out and claiming it for ourselves.

Benedict focuses on the dynamic relationship between the three names that became synonymous with the franchise and devoted their lives to it: owner Robert Kraft, coach Bill Belichick, and quarterback Tom Brady. He narrates how each one of them, along with many others along the way, built the Patriots’ dynasty.

This fresh account of Massachusetts's infamous Bulger brothers unveils a stunning criminal alliance, and with its dual biography format, goes deeper than the New York Times bestselling Black Mass. For the first time, journalist Howie Carr reveals the real story behind the infamous Bulgers-two brothers from South Boston who grew up to control a state. With political corruption on one side and deadly force on the other, the Bulgers shared a diabolic and destructive alliance for decades. James "Whitey" Bulger, the "bad" son, blazed a murderous trail to become Boston's most feared mobster and remains one of the FBI's Ten Most Wanted Fugitives. William "Billy" Bulger, the "good" son, wielded the gavel as president of the Massachusetts State Senate and the University of Massachusetts, but was eventually forced from both positions. The parallel stories of these two brothers, rich in anecdote and shocking in their revelations, read like an unholy hybrid of All the King's Men and The Godfather.

A mafioso is not a sell-out. The police officer who takes a bribe from a mafioso is a sell-out. Selling out is not about doing something bad. It is about half-doing the thing you are supposed to be doing and half-doing some other thing. The essence of sell-outism is not badness but corruptness, which is different. An Author's Republic audio production.
