Beschreibung

“There were only two amongst all Pamela Mardale’s friends who guessed that anything was wrong with her; and those two included neither her father nor her mother. Her mother, indeed, might have guessed, had shebeen a different woman. But she was a woman of schemes and little plots, who watched with concentration their immediate developments, but had no eyes for any lasting consequence. And it was no doubt as well for her peace of mind that she never guessed. But of the others it was unlikely that any one would suspect the truth. For Pamela made no outward sign. She hunted through the winter from her home under the Croft Hill in Leicestershire; she went everywhere, as the saying is, during the season in London; she held her own in her own world, lacking neither good spirits nor the look of health. There were, perhaps, two small peculiarities which marked her off from her companions. Shewa’s interested in things rather than in persons, and she preferred to talk to old men rather than to youths. But such points, taken by themselves, were not of an importance to attract attention.Yet there were two amongst her friends who suspected: Alan Caridean the schoolmaster of Roque rune, the little village carved out of the hillside to the east of Monte Carlo. The schoolmaster was the nearer to the truth, for he not only knew that something was amiss, he suspected what the something was. But then he had a certain advantage, since he had known Pamela Mardale when she was a child.”

“A deeply soulful novel that comprehends love and cruelty, and separates the big people from the small of heart, without ever losing sympathy for those unfortunates who don’t know how to live properly.” —Zadie Smith
One of the most important and enduring books of the twentieth century, Their Eyes Were Watching God brings to life a Southern love story with the wit and pathos found only in the writing of Zora Neale Hurston. Out of print for almost thirty years—due largely to initial audiences’ rejection of its strong black female protagonist—Hurston’s classic has since its 1978 reissue become perhaps the most widely read and highly acclaimed novel in the canon of African-American literature. The audio is performed by the legendary Ruby Dee.

The narrative begins in medias res, twenty years after Odysseus left for Troy and ten years after the war ended. He finds himself trapped on the island of Ogygia, held captive by the nymph Calypso, who is in love with him. Meanwhile, back in Ithaca, his wife Penelope and son Telemachus are besieged by a group of suitors who believe Odysseus to be dead and are vying for Penelope's hand in marriage.

"The Riddle of the Sands" stands as one of the earliest spy thrillers, an intriguing blend of adventure, suspense, and a genuine call to national vigilance. First published in 1903, Erskine Childers’s novel occupies a unique place in literary and historical context. Set against the backdrop of a world growing increasingly uncertain, this novel serves not only as a thrilling narrative but also as a reflection of the anxieties of pre-war Europe. Childers crafts a story so gripping and credible that it was heralded as both a piece of literature and a cautionary warning for an unprepared British government.
The story unfolds in the labyrinthine tidal channels and sandbanks of the Frisian Islands in the North Sea, where two young Englishmen, Carruthers and Davies, find themselves swept into an unintended espionage mission. What begins as a leisurely sailing holiday soon escalates into a daring adventure, as they uncover a clandestine German plot that could threaten England’s security. The novel's detailed nautical descriptions, drawn from Childers's own passion for sailing, lend an authenticity that deeply immerses the reader in the experience of navigating the sea and its lurking dangers.

    Description:
The Pale Man by Julius Long is a haunting tale of quiet dread and creeping inevitability. Known for his ability to blend psychological tension with subtle supernatural menace, Long crafts a story that lingers long after its final line.
The narrative centers on an encounter with a strange, cadaverous figure—a man unnaturally pale, watchful, and unsettlingly persistent. What begins as a fleeting glimpse soon becomes a recurring presence, appearing in places where he should not be and at times that defy coincidence. His expression is unreadable, his movements deliberate, and his silence more oppressive than any spoken threat.
As the appearances multiply, the protagonist is forced to confront an unbearable question: is the Pale Man a living stalker of flesh and blood, a hallucination born of fraying nerves, or something far older and more inhuman? Julius Long masterfully sustains ambiguity, allowing dread to grow not through violence, but through anticipation and the slow erosion of certainty.
Narrated by Amazon bestselling horror author Jonathan Dunne, this performance captures the oppressive atmosphere, mounting paranoia, and shadowed inevitability that define The Pale Man—a tale where fear does not shout, but watches… and waits.
