Synopsis

212 AD. Antioch, a jewel of the Roman East, shimmers with a thousand cultures, its marketplace vibrant with silks, spices, and the pungent aroma of murex dye. But a shadow lurks: a cheap, impossibly vivid purple floods the stalls, threatening the fortunes of established merchants like Seraphina Valeria, whose family has guarded the secrets of Tyrian purple for generations. This new dye isn’t just competition; it’s an unsettling echo of her family’s lost formula, a formula she believed vanished with her mother years ago.Driven by desperation, Seraphina plunges into Antioch’s labyrinthine alleys, a world of whispers and shadows. Her path collides with Nicholas Fox, a cynical Roman investigator haunted by betrayal.  Their shared pursuit of the counterfeit dye ignites a volatile alliance, a dance of suspicion and reluctant cooperation as Seraphina’s intimate knowledge of the dye trade clashes with Nicholas’s pragmatic Roman approach.Seraphina’s search leads back to her mother’s abandoned workshop, a place frozen in time. Cryptic clues emerge: coded recipes, hidden vials of exotic ingredients, and a fragmented map hinting at a secret island murex harvest.  Her mother’s disappearance is no longer a personal tragedy but a thread in a conspiracy unraveling the Roman textile industry. The crimson thread leads them to Ostia, Rome’s bustling port, a haven for smugglers and spies. The seemingly simple case deepens, revealing a plot reaching the heart of Roman power, implicating not just rival merchants, but powerful senators whose greed masks a sinister plot: to destabilize the empire by crippling its vital textile industry. As they uncover the truth, danger escalates.  Shadowy assassins pursue them, the vibrant purple now a stain of treachery and deceit. Nicholas, grappling with his attraction to the fiercely independent Seraphina, finds his loyalties tested by a hidden agenda of revenge. Is he truly seeking justice, or manipulating her for his own ends?Seraphina discovers her mother wasn't just a skilled dyer, but a member of a secret society dedicated to preserving ancient knowledge, a society that foresaw the potential for economic manipulation. Her family legacy becomes about safeguarding knowledge that could determine the fate of nations. In Rome’s opulent villas, the heart of the conspiracy pulsates. Seraphina and Nicholas infiltrate a world of lavish banquets and veiled threats, discovering the counterfeit dye is just one piece of a multifaceted plot: manipulated grain prices, forged alliances, the systematic undermining of Roman authority. The conspirators are playing a long game, aiming to weaken the empire from within. The climax explodes during a grand celebration in Rome. Seraphina, armed with her knowledge and alchemical skills, confronts the conspirators. Nicholas, torn between revenge and his burgeoning feelings for Seraphina, must choose his path.  The confrontation becomes a desperate fight for survival against skilled assassins and powerful senators. In the aftermath, the empire is shaken but not broken. The conspiracy is exposed, the conspirators brought to justice.  Seraphina embraces her role as a guardian of ancient knowledge, while Nicholas finds redemption in upholding justice. Their relationship, forged in danger, finds a new equilibrium.  The crimson stain fades, leaving a renewed appreciation for tradition, knowledge, and the enduring strength of the human spirit.

A man named Trevor Bennett, the personal secretary of one Professor Presbury, comes to Holmes with a most unusual problem. He is engaged to the professor's daughter, Edith, and the Professor is himself engaged to a young lady, Alice Morphy, although he himself is already 61 years of age. Their impending marriage has caused no scandal, but the trouble seems to have begun at about the time of the engagement. First, the professor suddenly left home for a fortnight without telling anyone of his destination, with the family later learning that he had been to Prague. Upon returning, Presbury unprecedentedly forbid Mr Bennett from opening certain stamped letters. The professor had also brought a carved wooden box from Prague, and became very angry with Bennett for touching it.
The whole household also observes severe changes in the man's personality: he has become furtive and sly, with changes in his moods and habits, some of which are quite bizarre, though not impeding his functions. Bennett notes particularly strange incidents: one, in which he saw the professor crawling along the hall on his hands and feet and his master swore him off; and another, witnessed by Edith Presbury, who saw her father at two o'clock in the morning at her bedroom window on the second floor.

Detective Mara Ellison, known for her sharp intuition and sharper tongue, is called in to untangle the mystery. What begins as a case of stage trickery gone wrong quickly spirals into something darker: secret debts, rival magicians with grudges, and a family history Victor spent his life trying to bury.
As Mara delves deeper into the labyrinth of illusions and lies, she discovers that the key to Victor’s disappearance lies not in the spotlight, but in the shadows behind it. And the closer she gets to the truth, the more she realizes—every trick has a price, and someone is willing to kill to keep the greatest illusion intact.
The Vanishing Point is a razor-sharp detective mystery where nothing is what it seems, and the final reveal is as shocking as any magician’s trick.

"The Adventure of the Lion's Mane" (1926), one of the 56 Sherlock Holmes short stories written by British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, is one of 12 stories in the cycle collected as The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes. It is notable for being narrated by Holmes himself, instead of by Dr. Watson (who does not appear in the story).
Holmes is enjoying his retirement in Sussex when one day at the beach, he meets his friend Harold Stackhurst, the headmaster of a nearby preparatory school called The Gables. No sooner have they met than Stackhurst's science teacher, Fitzroy McPherson, staggers up to them, clearly in agony and wearing only an overcoat and trousers. He collapses, manages to say something about a "lion's mane", and then succumbs. He is observed to have red welts all over his back, possibly administered by a flexible weapon of some kind, for the marks curve over his shoulder and round his ribs.
