Xuanzang and his disciples encountered Guanyin waiting to remind them to be careful in the nearby kingdom. Its king was hunting for four monks to complete his goal of killing ten thousand. The monkey stole clothes from some locals to conceal their identities as Buddhist monks. They entered the city and decided to sleep in a big trunk in a hostel to make sure no one could discover they were Buddhists while they slept. While in the trunk, the monkey baited hostel attendants by boasting that they were carrying a lot of silver. Local bandits got the word and stole the trunk containing the group in the middle of the night. However, soldiers noticed the burglars and fought to get the trunk back and presented it to the king. The monkey snuck out and shaved everyone in the royal palace bald with razors. The king was shocked the next day and realized that he had made many mistakes. When the group exited the trunk, the king decided to honor Buddhism and let the pilgrims leave safely.
