Synopsis

“Fred Kaplan’s Lincoln offers penetrating insights on Lincoln’s ability to explain complex ideas in language accessible to a broad range of readers and listeners.” — James M. McPherson, The New York Review of Books
“A fine, invaluable book. . . . Certain to become essential to our understanding of the 16th president. . . . Kaplan meticulously analyzes how Lincoln’s steadily maturing prose style enabled him to come to grips with slavery and, as his own views evolved, to express his deepening opposition to it.” — Jonathan Yardley, The Washington Post Book World
Fascinating. . . . persuasive [and] highly perceptive.” — Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times
From acclaimed biographer Fred Kaplan comes an illuminating look at the life of Abraham Lincoln that chronicles his genius with language.

These memoirs are delightful to read, from the mischievous tales of Peter growing up to the emergence of a Peta, a young woman who chose to dedicate her life to serving others as a nurse and midwife. Her story is a life of daring, daring to stand up and speak out, daring to be that voice for others, daring to be different, and do it all with kindness and empathy.
Peta has touched so many lives and continues to do so.
An incredible storyteller, poet, writer and creative, Peta is a testament to a life well-lived. Her ability to love, care, and serve others seems to have no limits.
As Mahatma Gandhi said, "The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others."
Lisa Evans - Speaker, Storyteller, Coach, Midwife.

The forgotten story of the first woman elected to the US Senate, and her historic career during the Depression and Second World War—includes photos.

Hattie Caraway unexpectedly became a United States senator in 1931 by filling the seat of her late husband. But what her colleagues viewed as an honorary position was in fact the start of a distinguished career.

Despite strong male opposition, Hattie won reelection—and loyally and effectively served her Arkansas constituency for twelve years through the difficult times of the Great Depression and World War II. In this biography Caraway scholar Dr. Nancy Hendricks recounts Senator Caraway’s historic career through previously unseen letters and photos, and shows how Caraway effected change in the American political landscape.

In this military memoir, the author describes how the wars of life did not kill her but made her stronger through everything surrounding her by God's grace. Three powerful tales from the acclaimed chronicler of the American West—including the #1 New York Times bestseller, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee. Two profoundly moving, candid histories and a powerful novel illuminate important aspects of the Native American story.  Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee: The #1 New York Times bestseller that awakened the world to the destruction of American Indians in the nineteenth-century West, Dee Brown’s groundbreaking history focuses on the betrayals, battles, and systematic slaughter suffered by Native American tribes between 1860 and 1890, culminating in the Sioux massacre at Wounded Knee. “Shattering, appalling, compelling . . . One wonders, reading this searing, heartbreaking book, who, indeed, were the savages” (The Washington Post).  The Fetterman Massacre: A riveting account of events leading up to the Battle of the Hundred Slain—the devastating 1866 conflict at Wyoming’s Ft. Phil Kearney that pitted Lakota, Arapaho, and Northern Cheyenne warriors—including Oglala chief Red Cloud, against the United States cavalry under the command of Captain William Fetterman. Based on a wealth of historical resources and sparked by Brown’s narrative genius, this is an essential look at one of the frontier’s defining conflicts.  Creek Mary’s Blood: This New York Times bestseller fictionalizes the true story of Mary Musgrove—born in 1700 to a Creek tribal chief—and five generations of her family. The sweeping narrative spans the Revolutionary War, the Trail of Tears, and the Civil War—in which Mary’s descendants fought on both sides of the conflict. Rich in detail and human drama, Creek Mary’s Blood offers “a robust, unfussed crash-course in Native American history that rolls from East to West with dark, inexorable energy” (Kirkus Reviews).

Trishna Singh OBE was born in Glasgow in the 1950s, a first generation Scottish Bhat Sikh.  Her father came to the UK in the late 1930s and her mother followed after the Partition of India by the British in 1947.

Trishna left school, at the age of 13, with no qualifications. She had an arranged marriage, aged 21, and moved to Edinburgh to live with her husband.

As a young girl, she questioned the cultural requirements of her community which stated that married women were subservient to their mothers-in-law and their husbands, and existed solely to have children and look after their families, in direct opposition to the teachings of the Sikh religion which states man and woman are equal. And although

Trishna's marriage was a marriage of equals, she was still expected to adhere to the social and cultural restrictions placed upon her by the wider Scottish Bhat Sikh community.

Trishna's life has been challenging, in part. She has battled against her community's traditions which she rightly saw as archaic customs, begun in India, and designed to 'keep women in their place' and has lived her adult life in a city she did not grow up in but which is now her home.

In 1989 she founded Leith Sikh Community Group, now Sikh Sanjog. Its aim was to provide support for women in the Sikh community who had been settling in Edinburgh since the 1950s.

Thirty-plus years later Trishna remains a director of Sikh Sanjog, along the way having studied and attained a BA in Community Learning and Development.

A Silent Voice Speaks is her story.

One of Shakespeare’s most popular plays, As You Like It is a pastoral comedy of mistaken identity, wit, and love. Daughter of a banished duke and forced to flee the court, Rosalind hides in the Forest of Arden disguised as a man. When her true love Orlando also shows up in the forest, she courts him without revealing her identity. Meanwhile, Phebe mistakenly falls in love with her disguise, Silvius pines for Phebe, Jacques philosophizes, and Touchstone makes fun of it all, and love and happiness triumph (for the most part) as Rosalind orchestrates a happy ending amid the confusion.
