Beschreibung

This vintage book contains a comprehensive guide to the problems of geometry and measurement encountered by sheet metal workers. It comprises a series of examples that show the working out of the circumferences, areas, and capacities for various shapes-an exercise that is intended to enable the student to deal with any ordinary problem that may arise in the workshop. Contents include: "Length of Material Required for a Round Pipe", "Amount of Material for a Square Pipe", "Length of Perimeter of a Hexagon", "Square and Circular Sections of Pipe of given Dimensions", "Length of Side of a Square to be Enclosed by a Given Circle", "Length of Arc when Angle and Radius are Known", "Amount of Material for an Ellipse when Length and Width are Given", et cetera. Many vintage books such as this are increasingly scarce and expensive. We are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern edition complete with a specially commissioned new introduction on metal work. This book was first published in 1913.

The name Leslie Townes Hope is not the most familiar to us. Born in Eltham, London on May 29th, 1903 he and his family emigrated to the United States aboard the SS Philadelphia before moving to Cleveland, Ohio.

Although he entered show business in the 1920s it was only in 1928 that he changed his name to the one and only Bob Hope.

Stints in Vaudeville and then Broadway was followed by his radio debut in 1932 and feature films in 1938.

1938 was a banner year for Bob Hope as it was also the debut season for the eventual decade running smash-hit radio show: The Pepsodent Show. Despite the sponsors, name getting the billing this was Hope’s show.

His opening monologue was the result of his hiring from his own pocket – he had an extravagant salary from the sponsor - of a team of 8 writers to write top notch jokes and skits. His comic timing turned him into a sensation. The show was so popular that it had its pick of the best of show business stars. Everyone wanted in.

Now its time to cut the talk and get ready for laughs. It’s time for Bob Hope and his guests.

Two merry mathematicians explore the geometry of gift-wrapping, board game theory, and much more in this hilarious holiday treat.

How do you apply game theory to select who should be on your Christmas shopping list? What equations should you use to decorate the Christmas tree? Will calculations show Santa is getting steadily thinner—shimmying up and down chimneys for a whole night—or fatter—as he munches on cookies and milk in billions of houses across the world?

In The Indisputable Existence of Santa Claus, distinguished mathematicians Hannah Fry and Thomas Oléron Evans demonstrate, with eminently readable clarity, how applied mathematics are so thoroughly interwoven throughout our everyday lives by explaining mathematical concepts through one very merry motif: Christmas. In their quest to provide mathematical proof for the existence of Santa, the authors take readers on a festive journey through a traditional holiday season, wherein every activity, from wrapping presents to playing board games to cooking the perfect turkey, is painstakingly and hilariously analyzed. Because who hasn’t always wondered how to set up a mathematically perfect Secret Santa?

Lighthearted and diverting with Christmasy diagrams, sketches and graphs, equations, Markov chains, and matrices, The Indisputable Existence of Santa Claus brightens up the bleak midwinter with a stockingful of mathematical marvels.
