  Peter Withe: All for the Love of...

  The name Peter Withe conjures up memories of a bygone era, when football was a proper man's game and there were very few egos around the dressing room - and players drove around in Maestro's instead of Maserati's. The well-travelled striker saw action in South Africa and the United States before heading back to England to achieve considerable domestic success and pick up international honours.
  At 6'2" and strong on the ball, Withe cut an imposing figure up front and his ability to shield the ball proved an asset to those who played alongside him. Having signed for Nottingham Forest in 1976, he won the Football League and Football League Cup with them before moving to Newcastle and then Aston Villa. The £500,000 transfer fee that took him to Villa Park in 1980 was a club record but it proved well justified as he helped them win the League title and the European Cup when he scored the only goal in a 1-0 defeat of Bayern Munich in 1982.
  
  He was just shy of his 30th birthday when he received his first England cap, playing in the 1-0 friendly defeat to Brazil at Wembley in August 1981. He went on to make a further ten appearances for the Three Lions and was part of Ron Greenwood's World Cup squad in 1982 although he did not play. He claimed a total of 11 caps for England, scoring one goal in the 1984 Euro Qualifier win over Hungary at Wembley.
  Withe finished his career with Huddersfield Town in 1990 and had very successful stints as an international Manager with Thailand and Indonesia. He now lives in Perth, Australia.

  Simon McCartney was a cocky young British alpinist climbing many of the hardest routes in the Alps during the late seventies, but it was a chance meeting in Chamonix in 1977 with Californian 'Stonemaster' Jack Roberts that would dramatically change both their lives – and almost end Simon's.
  Inspired by a Bradford Washburn photograph published in Mountain magazine, their first objective was the 5,500-foot north face of Mount Huntington, one of the most dangerous walls in the Alaska Range. The result was a route so hard and serious that for decades nobody believed they had climbed it – it is still unrepeated to this day. Then, raising the bar even higher, they made the first ascent of the south-west face of Denali, a climb that would prove almost fatal for Simon, and one which would break the bond between him and climbing, separating the two young climbers. But the bond between Simon and Jack couldn't remain dormant forever. A lifetime later, a chance reconnection with Jack gave Simon the chance to bury the ghosts of what happened high on Denali, when he had faced almost certain death.

  Mount Everest 1938 - Whether...

  'Whether these mountains are climbed or not, smaller expeditions are a step in the right direction.'
  It's 1938, the British have thrown everything they've got at Everest but they've still not reached the summit. War in Europe seems inevitable; the Empire is shrinking. Still reeling from failure in 1936, the British are granted one more permit by the Tibetans, one more chance to climb the mountain. Only limited resources are available, so can a small team be assembled and succeed where larger teams have failed?
  H.W. Tilman is the obvious choice to lead a select team made up of some of the greatest British mountaineers history has ever known, including Eric Shipton, Frank Smythe and Noel Odell. Indeed, Tilman favours this lightweight approach. He carries oxygen but doesn't trust it or think it ethical to use it himself, and refuses to take luxuries on the expedition, although he does regret leaving a case of champagne behind for most of his time on the mountain.
  On the mountain, the team is cold, the weather very wintery. It is with amazing fortitude that they establish a camp six at all, thanks in part to a Sherpa going by the family name of Tensing. Tilman carries to the high camp, but exhausted he retreats, leaving Smythe and Shipton to settle in for the night. He records in his diary, 'Frank and Eric going well—think they may do it.' But the monsoon is fast approaching …
  In Mount Everest 1938, first published in 1948, Tilman writes that it is difficult to give the layman much idea of the actual difficulties of the last 2,000 feet of Everest. He returns to the high camp and, in exceptional style, they try for the ridge, the route to the summit and those immense difficulties of the few remaining feet.
