Quantum mechanics? Just hearing the name, we get sick. It seems to be something complicated (and is), but here I will try to explain this theory in simple terms. However, this does not mean that you will go to understand quantum mechanics. As Niels Bohr said, "who says he understands quantum mechanics, you have not understood it." Does it look like something strange, doesn't it? Yes so. Quantum mechanics challenges our common sense. Quantum mechanics is the theory that describes the behavior of the universe at the microscopic level; are composed of atoms and subatomic particles and quantum mechanics explains the behavior of these basic units. Hence, the name: Mechanical (explain behavior) quantum (the microscopic world, the quantum). There are three explanations for this schizophrenic behavior of nature at the level of atoms and subatomic particles, but none of them are officially accepted by the scientific community. The appointment of Walter Luff as the new general manager was, however, to prove a turning point. Working closely with English Electric, based in nearby Preston, Luff developed a series of streamlined trams—both single-deck and double-deck—that were to revolutionize the town’s tramway. By the end of 1930s, the corporation had acquired more than 100 new trams—the majority built by English Electric but with twenty coming from Brush—that ensured the survival not only of the key route along the Promenade to Fleetwood but also of the bulk of the “town” routes. Over the next seventy years these trams were to form the cornerstone of the Blackpool system. It was only with the modernization of the system in the first decade of the 20th century that, finally, they became largely obsolete but still, as part of the heritage fleet, they remain very much part of the contemporary Blackpool scene. Nature and art share the quality of perseverance and optimism. Vecchione illustrates this when she says, “Art is optimistic. No matter what emotions a piece of art may convey, art-making itself is a refusal to be plowed under by doubt, political systems, poverty or any number of other things.” She goes on to point out that nature shares those same qualities. “Determined plants push up between the slivery cracks in the concrete, making their leafy way to the light where they thrive. If nature is curtailed in one way, it does it’s best to find another. Over and over again.” She describes how the act of being in nature expanded her imagination, which made the act of doing art more meaningful. When our creative spirit is in touch with the natural world, the boundaries and walls are removed. She believes that encouraging creativity requires both structure and the freedom to imagine. As she points out, “The imagination wants to grow by its very nature and the same is true with nature. If water comes to a wall, it doesn’t pack up its bag and say forget about it. Water finds a way around. Imagination does the same thing. They’re both life sustaining, life-giving aspects of this planet.” Nature, she says, offers us a perfect place to daydream.
