Across one day in London, twelve elderly men and women sit in flats, walk, or wait, and speak about their histories, their hopes, their loves, their disappointments and griefs -and above all seek to express who they are and what their life has been. Most are immigrants -Irish, West Indian, Polish, Italian, and German, struggling with a feeling of rootlessness. Drawn from Sally Read's experiences as a community psychiatric nurse in central London, these twelve monologues are the voices of schizophrenia, dementia, depression, and anxiety. Authentic and moving, they form a vivid portrait of the capital -its richness and its sadnesses, its waves of immigration, and its living witness to the devastating effects of World War II. Four of the voices are Jewish refugees who arrived in London as children, leaving parents to die in Nazi-occupied Europe. Candid and vivid, these monologues make us privvy to entire lives through a poetic voice that is at once brutally realistic, and beautifully realised. Above all, these poems give marvellous expression to people whose speech, memory, and coherence is often marred by illness. The result is a stunning insight into other people's stories, and how we may come to measure our own.

Synopsis A passionate and adventurous girl from Australia saves money all summer with a unique and romantic dream to travel to Cuba to dance in search of the best Salsa Dancers (Salseros) in the world. She travels alone from Spain and arranges to stay in the centre of the city with a Cuban family and becomes truly intimate with the restrictive, socialist circumstances of Cuban life. Although she is well travelled and speaks Spanish, she encounters the complete opposite of what she had envisioned. She becomes very ill and meets some characters that only leave her with feelings of a broken dream, with the exception of one handsome Cuban who gives her some medicine. Things change when she meets an Australian couple and travels 6 hours to ‘Trinidad de Cuba’. There she meets some journalists from the New York Times, recently arrived from Panama to write a story about the upcoming changes in Cuba and makes a deal with them. Shortly after she discovers she cannot access her bank account. She finds herself with no money and no way back to the city. There is no internet access, phones, Western Union on Australian embassy and her new friends have moved onto Santa Clara. Tilia struggles to find her way back to Havana and spends 6 weeks in Cuba without money risking everything to survive and try to get a flight home. A true story of self discovery, survival and the tragedy of contrasting worlds.

John Donne

John Donne was born on the 22nd January 1572 in London, into a Roman Catholic family when Catholicism was illegal in England, and there was turbulence and unrest with both state and church throughout much of Europe.

His father, also named John, died when he was four, and his mother, Elizabeth Haywood, married a wealthy widower, ensuring the family were looked after. He received a good education at both Oxford and Cambridge but was unable to obtain a degree without taking the oath of supremacy, which as a Catholic he refused to do.

During the 1590s, Donne wrote a wide range of verses, including both erotic and sacred poems, creating two major volumes of work. His strong vivacious and sensual style fusing intellect and passion, as well as inventive use of subtle argument and syntax, provided a new radical perspective that reached beyond his contemporaries, and continued to chime and charm poetry lovers throughout the ages.

Difficult to believe that with this enormous talent, Donne lived in poverty for many years, exacerbated by his secret marriage to Anne Moore, which meant no dowry, and they having twelve children. Later he served in Parliament and became Dean of St Paul's in 1621, noted for his learned and charismatic sermons.

John Donne died in London on the 31st March 1631, but leaves an enormous legacy of many splendid influential poems. He was known as the founder of the Metaphysical Movement and is widely regarded as one of Britain's best-loved poets.
