The New York Times–bestselling collection of essays on the power of ordinary people to effect lasting change—from the host and cofounder of Democracy Now!   Amy Goodman and Denis Moynihan began writing a weekly column, “Breaking the Sound Barrier,” for King Features Syndicate in 2006. This timely new sequel to Goodman’s New York Times bestseller of the same name gives voice to the many ordinary people standing up to corporate and government power—and refusing to be silent.  The Silenced Majority pulls back the veil of corporate media reporting to dig deep into the politics of “climate apartheid,” the implications of the Fukushima nuclear disaster, the movement to halt the execution of Troy Anthony Davis, and the globalization of dissent “from Tahrir Square to Liberty Plaza.” Throughout, Goodman and Moynihan show the work of ordinary people to change their media—and change the world.  Praise for Amy Goodman   “Amy Goodman has taken investigative journalism to new heights.” —Noam Chomsky, leading public intellectual and author of Hopes and Prospects   “Amy Goodman is not afraid to speak truth to power. She does it every day.” —Susan Sarandon, activist and actress   “Crusading journalism at its best.” —Arianna Huffington, founder of The Huffington Post   “A towering progressive freedom fighter in the media and the world.” —Cornel West, author of Race Matters   “What journalism should be: beholden to the interests of people, not power and profit.” —Arundhati Roy, author of The End of Imagination

Putting police power into the center of the picture of capitalismThe ubiquitous nature and political attraction of the concept of order has to be understood in conjunction with the idea of police. Since its first publication, this book has been one of the most powerful and wide-ranging critiques of the police power. Neocleous argues for an expanded concept of police, able to account for the range of institutions through which policing takes place. These institutions are concerned not just with the maintenance and reproduction of order, but with its very fabrication, especially the fabrication of a social order founded on wage labor. By situating the police power in relation to both capital and the state and at the heart of the politics of security, the book opens up into an understanding of the ways in which the state administers civil society and fabricates order through law and the ideology of crime. The discretionary violence of the police on the street is thereby connected to the wider administrative powers of the state, and the thud of the truncheon to the dull compulsion of economic relations.

    Sample Insights:
    1) Gad Saad is a Lebanese-Jewish author who experienced the Lebanese Civil War that broke out in 1975. During that time, which group you belonged to mattered more than your individuality. It was a war fueled by tribalism and sectarianism, and it is likely what caused Saad’s disdain for identity politics.
    2) Psychoanalytic theories often overestimate the influence parents have on shaping their child’s identity. They tend to ignore the unique combination of genes that defines us. While some people might indeed act in accordance with how their parents raised them, others are more driven by a desire to meet certain ideals.

Could you retain your faith even if it meant losing your life? Your family’s lives? To many Christians in the Middle East today, a “momentary, light affliction” means enduring only torture instead of martyrdom. The depth of oppression Jesus followers suffer is unimaginable to most Western Christians. Yet, it is an everyday reality for those who choose faith over survival in Syria, Iran, Egypt, Lebanon, and other countries hostile to the Gospel of Christ. InKilling Christians, Tom Doyle takes readers to the secret meetings, the torture rooms, the grim prisons, and even the executions that are the “calling” of countless Muslims-turned-Christians.Each survivor longs to share with brothers and sisters “on the outside” what Christ has taught them. Killing Christians is their message to readers who still enjoy freedom to practice their faith. None would wish their pain and suffering on those who do not have to brave such misery, but the richness gained through their remarkable trials are delivered—often in their own words—through this book. The stories are breathtaking, the lessons soul-stirring and renewing. Killing Christians presents the dead serious work of expanding and maintaining the Faith.
