Beschreibung

From the moment I watched a documentary of Chris Bonington and Tom Patey climb the perpendicular flanks of the Old Man of Hoy I knew that my life would not be complete until I had followed in their footholds. That was in 1983 when I was thirteen. Within months I was tackling my first crags and dreaming of standing atop Europe's tallest sea stack with the Atlantic pounding 450 feet below. Those dreams went dark at nineteen when I learned I was going blind. I hung up my harness for twenty years and tried to ignore the twinge of desire I felt every time The Old Man appeared on TV.' Middle aged, by now a family man, crime novelist and occasional radio personality, Red Szell's life nonetheless felt incomplete. He was still climbing, but only indoors until he shared his old, unforgotten, dream with his buddies, Matthew and Andres, and it became obvious that an attempt had to be made. With the help of mountain guides Martin Moran and Nick Carter, and adventure cameraman Keith Partridge, supported by family and an ever growing following, Red set out to confront the Orcadian giant.

Are you ready to take your soccer game to the next level? Or just looking for ways to improve your team? This audiobook can help solve your problems. Whether known as football or, as in the US, soccer; the ‘beautiful game’ is the most popular sport in the world. The best players earn millions of dollars per year, and the greatest clubs are icons in their regions. Children love putting down a couple of jerseys and having a kick around. Globally, it is the team sport that has the greatest public participation and, at the highest level - such as the World Cup, top leagues and cup finals - matches are watched live by tens of thousands of cheering fans. Support is only limited by stadium size, with tens or even hundreds of millions following their team on TV. It is therefore no surprise that so many people love to play the game, and want to become better at it. Youngsters dream of becoming the next Pele, Messi, Maradona or Ronaldo. This book offers coaches and players insight into how to become a better soccer player. There are chapters on the role of the individual in this team game, and the role of the team in a sport lit up by the brilliance of individuals. There are drills included to help the player and his side. Indeed, it is drills that lead to players becoming experts, and as good as they can be. Drills take the individual components of soccer and allow practice in a pressure-free, or pressure-controlled, environment. Imagine that a game of soccer is like an English literature examination. For that test, you get taught the information you need to know; you practice using that learning in tests, discussions, and essays. You work on it on your own, making sure that your mind is fit enough to tackle the challenge of the final exam. What you very much do not want is to be learning new concepts under the pressure of the examination hall. That is the place to show what you can do, not try out risky ideas.

When dealing with emotional baggage, it's best to pack light.
An amusing and life-affirming travel memoir, concluding with tips for managing depressive episodes.
Keith Foskett refused to let his dark mood define his limitations. Unknowingly suffering with depression, he took to hiking the wilds of Scotland to face his inner demons. From the craggy Highlands of the Cape Wrath Trail and West Highland Way, to the canals criss-crossing the low country, 600 miles of unforgiving hiking terrain called his name.
Keith repositioned his compass to what really matters in life. As laughter became his travelling companion, he discovered that when dealing with emotional baggage, it's best to pack light. Pushing his mind and body past breaking point, his journey could set a brave new course for coping with depression.
Battling ferocious weather, the ubiquitous Scottish midge, strange-sounding local delicacies and substandard TV sets, this is one man's battle to conquer the wilds of Scotland, and his own psychological demons.
    Editorial reviews:
'Despite the challenges of the terrain and the weather, the author's affinity with the Highlands is obvious and his descriptions of the landscape are captivating. We are introduced to beautiful glens, rivers and lochs that many of us will never have heard of. We are reminded by an experienced international long-distance hiker to not forget the quality of what we have at home in the UK.
It's hard not to admire Keith Foskett for what he achieves in this book. But he does not take himself too seriously either, and handles the weight of the subject matter with humility and laughter.
This is a bold and important book which I genuinely hope will appeal to a wide audience.'

Straddling the border between England and Wales, the railway linking Shrewsbury to Chester has been serving the communities along its length since 1848, as well as being, for over a century, a key component of the Great Western Railway’s main line from the Mersey to London. It still remains busy with passenger trains and some freight, so it is not lost in the conventional sense, however, this pictorial journey along what remains an attractive and scenic line focuses on its heyday in the age of steam hauled-trains. Whilst much of the infrastructure of the steam age has been swept away, the line is still busy and remains an important transport link.
